Default RE: My 2006 Money is expiring

Although there doesn't seem to be a way to have Money continue to download
your statements for you, you ARE still able to download them manually from
your bank's website and import them into Money on your computer. I've been
having to do this anyway because my bank wasn't supported by Money's
automatic download feature.

Default RE: My 2006 Money is expiring

I did the same thing, and bit down and installed the new (i.e. 'last year's)
version. So that's a done deal.

But .. why isn't there an option to renew the online services portion?

And how much wll it cost at the beginning of 2010 to keep it up?

Honestly, it's like the supermarket adding water to produce and Tyson adding
it to chicken, at a price more expensive than gasoline - the hidden costs of
upgrades. For years I've spent more time fiddling with options and relearning
software I've used for decades than I have in doing work (not limited to MS,
but they are the biggest culprit .. and not just because they are the
industry big dog.

Quicken probably won't work any better on your system. And it won't do much
for your Money data, either.

Default RE: My 2006 Money is expiring

Sadly, my 2006 version of Money has apparently "expired". I had understood
that I would not receive anymore software updates after September 1. I was
prepared for that - and would have been fine with the program simply
continuing to function as it had, but without support. My understanding is
that the only official option I have, which allows me to receive online
updates from my bank, is to "upgrade" to Money 2008 Plus. Can't do that.
Unfortunately, the minimum system requirements of the new version would not
allow it to run on my system. So, is there any other option? Is there any way
to tweak this program to get it to work the way it did before it "expired".
Change a "0" to a "1" somewhere in the registry or something? There's got to
be some sort of fix to this. Or, is my only option to switch to ... Quicken?

Yes, the Money Plus will open your Money 2006 data file, assuming you
don't have any hidden corruption so bad that Money Plus plotzes.

The data file will be backed up in Money 2006 format, then converted to
Money Plus format. The updated file will no longer be readable by Money
2006. Any backup files created by Money Plus will not be readable by
Money 2006.

Review your backup strategy. Make copies of your Money 2006 data file
in a couple of different places before you start the upgrade process.

I installed my Money 2006 in December '06 after I got my newer Dell with XP.
I'm really upset that my updates just expired. I had been ignoring the
expiration notices, since earliier versions gave an additional grace period.
In my case I had planned to be able to hold out 'till December '08 or Jan.
'09. Then get what would be Money '09. But, from other post I guess there
will not be an '09? I really only need updates to adjust per share prices of
securities, since I don't trust MS with my account passwords for statement
downloads. Will trial download of Money + work with my '06 data?

M2006 deluxe here:
I just clicked on "view interactive charts" ( to see historical chart on
holding) and I get:

"A new version of the MSN Money Investment Toolbox, including the
Portfolio Manager, has just been released.
You'll need to either upgrade to the current version or use the Basic
Investment Toolbox to view your data."

For the "new version" I must enroll ( I don't want anything online).
I click "Basic" - and same window reappears /refreshes.
Is that because I don't have latest software ?
If I DON'T put my info online, I can't view a chart ?
What is the connection between the two ?

Mine expires next week - that's it for me. I'll do things manually.

One major 'improvement' in Money 2007 was the elimination of being able to
synch Money 2007 and the portfolio at moneycentral.com. It makes no sense
as to why they made this decision - but that's Microsoft.

In the past. Microsoft has had some extremely painful updates to new
versions of Money - common features removed, or totally changed, etc. Has
anyone tried the new (well, last year's) version yet? How has the upgarde
process been?

Thanks.

Money Plus is not expected to be able to use an International
English version file. You should continue with your Money 2005, at

I have never understood the rationale for Microsoft dumbing down the
moneycentral portfolio. In it's original form you could do drag/drop of
individual securities - that disappeared about 4 years ago. Accrued
interest on bond purchase used to work but disappeared in one of the website
'upgrades' and nobody cares when I have asked about it. The final absurdity
is the elimination of the capability to synch with Money 2007. One of the
MVPS posted an rationale that it was related to security but that made no
sense. These changes must be related to some cost savings for Microsoft but
all it does is drive people away from using the online portfolio. Could
this be the reason?????

Yikes - don't bother:
1. They no longer offer trial.
2. If you DID buy Quicken, I see this at bottom of online FAQ's page :
https://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin...p?p_faqid=1052

Current Quotes download issues :
List of known Quotes/Quicken.com issues
The following is a list of issues you may experience when downloading
quotes:

1.. Dividend information is not downloading for some securities.
2.. Some Money Market funds are downloading the Yield amount instead of
the Net Asset Value.
3.. Some iShare indexes on the Pacific Exchange (PCX) are not
downloading historical prices.
4.. Securities with single-character ticker symbols are downloading
incorrectly. (For example, the ticker symbol C for Citigroup Inc.
downloads as INDEX:C).
5.. Quotes are not downloading for certain Exchange Traded Funds (ETF)
securities.
6.. When adding a new security to Quicken using the Ticker symbol,
Quicken assigns the incorrect security name for some secuities. To
workaround this, enter the Ticker symbol, and enter the correct security
name in the Name field.

I would agree if all Banks offered download facilities, but they don't, and
MS has to pay Yodlee (and others) for screen scraping facilities/software to
get account data.

You're not the only one :
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...r=US&sloc=&p=1

MS ideas of 'updates' vs. OUR ideas of 'improvements' are 2 different
things. Like most companies, they want you to 'go online with them' so
that they can 'offer/provide' you with 'services'.

They took us from dumb terminals to PC/workstations. Hmmm.. now that
everyone is there... where's the money? ... to bring us back to terminals
and have THEM be the server. ( A la Larry Ellison's idea of 10+ yrs ago
which Bill Gates dismissed )
http://www.usfca.edu/~morriss/478/pr...roduction.html

So rather than 'what used to be included in Money - and free' is now a
"service" for which you may be charged. What really bothers me is the
arrangements that they have with the info providers/ the way they do it.
( Rhetorically he asked) Once I buy a program, why should ME downloading
info from "my bank/broker" involve Microsoft ? I'm not using THEIR
services to ... draw charts, do research, pay bills etc.

Since DOS days, I had tried and always hated Quicken's interface, but I'll
give it another look this year. I have a partition I use for beta
testing. I'll download the latest trial version and check it out .

I don't understand the need for 'updates'. It seems that as new versions of
Money come out, useful features are eliminated. If you want to synch with
moneycentral.com you need to use M2006 - the feature was eliminated in M2007

Touché.
( I went thru this last time with M2004 - just feel that the ONLY people
who get 24 months of service are those that buy it on Sept 1 - right ?)
You have a boxed copy ? Use that as an example. If you really liked
M2006 and wanted to keep using it - what if you bought 3 copies. Use for
24 months - toss first - Install next. Since you would PAY for each box ,
why not let you USE it. I know - they don't do it that way, but doesn't
make sense for consumers. Other products , term starts upon
use/registration not ' fixed expiration date'. It's not the $35, it's
that every version seems to give me less of what I want and more of THEIR
'online service offerings'. THAT's the reason they do it ! I don't use any
of it. M2000,2001,2004,2006 I see less and less of what I want. Now I
should buy M2008 or 2009 - I want MY info on the screen, not more links to
their stuff. .... Open the windows and shout " I'm mad as hell and I'm
not going to take it anymore !' ( from 'Network')

Flame off ... now to find Cal's old message about 'how to download
indirectly from fidelity'...
