You would only need to copy the *.mny file (often named "My Money.mny", and> and > send that file to my laptop and open Money on the laptop and bring in that > file? Many users use a USB thumbdrive for file transfers and external backups. If the existing files on your desktop and notebook have different names, you will need to click directly on the copied file, or select the copied file with "File" > "Open". Afterwards, Money will open that file by default. Opening the copied file on the notebook won't update the existing file on the notebook, so you may want to rename the existing file to "My Money - OLD.mny" or similar, so that you don't accidentally copy the wrong file back to the desktop when you switch computers again. You will need to have the same version of Money on both systems. You mentioned that licensing wasn't an issue in your first post, so I'm assuming you have a retail license, and have already installed the same version on both computers as the license allows. You can click "Help" > "About" to verify that both computers have the same version and update/sp level. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

| Scott, Thanks for your suggestion. Let me clarify, I do not have any issues with a second or third user updating Money. I am the only person in the family who controls it. So I would update, for example on the road. When I come home I want to merely update what I did while on travel. Additionally, I would want to update my laptop once I go back on travel with the desktop current information. My big concern is how (mechanically) I bring over data from one CPU to another. What file would that be? would I merely go to Money/file/backup and send that file to my laptop and open Money on the laptop and bring in that file? Will it recognize it and update the previous data on my laptop with the most current data. And the same could be said going the other way, when I come home, I would do the same with my laptop and send that data to my desktop to bring it up to date? Is this the correct approach that would not have any negative consequences? Thanks you Scott, David..... _Preparation_> I currently use MS money 2007 on my home desktop cpu. > Can anyone provide exact details on how to also run MS Money 2007 on > my laptop while on travel? > It becomes increasingly necessary to have it available. > I do not foresee a SLA issue. > How can I keep them both current (updating while on travel and at > home as well) and not create a nightmare or corrupt something? > Your help is appreciated, and pls. be specific with steps, since my > previous creative attempt did not work. 1. Install Money on your laptop. 2. Copy the Sample.mny file to somewhere in your "My Documents" tree. This gives you full rights. It's especially important if you use Vista. 3. Right-click the Money shortcut and choose "Run As...", then select account "Administrator" and put in the proper password. 4. Open the copy of the Sample.mny file and allow any needed updates to install. 5. Copy your production Money data file to the "My Documents" tree on your laptop. 6. Create a shortcut to this file on your desktop. _Operation_ 1. Determine which PC was last used to modify the Money data file. Call this PC_Latest and the other machine PC_Older. 2. IF (you're logged in to PC_Latest) THEN fire up Money ELSE copy the data file from PC_Latest to PC_Older fire up Money ENDIF _Notes_ * You can only make changes to one copy of the file at a time. * If you make changes on one machine, you have to copy the data file before opening it on the other machine. * If you make changes to both copies, you lose the entries in one file or the other. * You and your spouse *cannot* both enter transactions, then merge them. Money has no provision for merging transactions from two data files. _Recommendations_ * Put the data file on a USB data stick. You can carry it around with you. * Change the backup settings to keep the last 99 versions. You'll need them when you forget to copy the file before you open it. * Change the backup settings to keep 99 copies of the offline backup. You'll need those when your PC (or the network, or your modem, or ...) crashes while copying the file. Keep some of them at your friend's house in case your PC is destroyed or stolen. -- Steve Bell New Life Home Improvement Arlington, TX |

There is no "merge" functionality: If you're updating the "away" copy on> I currently use MS money 2007 on my home desktop cpu. > Can anyone provide exact details on how to also run MS Money 2007 on my > laptop while on travel? > It becomes increasingly necessary to have it available. > I do not foresee a SLA issue. > How can I keep them both current (updating while on travel and at home as > well) and not create a nightmare or corrupt something? > Your help is appreciated, and pls. be specific with steps, since my > previous > creative attempt did not work. > Regards, > David the road, and someone else is updating the "home" copy at home, you'll end up with a big mess. If you have access to Gmail or Skydrive or some other way to move a big file over the internet, you could take the file on the road, update it from 3am-3pm, upload or mail it, and then your spouse/accountant/etc could transfer it to the desktop, update it from 3pm-3am, upload or mail it, you transfer it back to the notebook, and then repeat the cycle for the duration of the trip. That's the only way I can see to make this happen. Any deviation from the schedule could result in data loss or a big unmergeable mess. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

| Good day… I currently use MS money 2007 on my home desktop cpu. Can anyone provide exact details on how to also run MS Money 2007 on my laptop while on travel? It becomes increasingly necessary to have it available. I do not foresee a SLA issue. How can I keep them both current (updating while on travel and at home as well) and not create a nightmare or corrupt something? Your help is appreciated, and pls. be specific with steps, since my previous creative attempt did not work. Regards, David |
