Hi Cal,

Just FYI, I finally managed to fix the problem with this solution:

Method 4: Give Money additional access in Internet Explorer or Windows
Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to
attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do
not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you
can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at
your own risk. 1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet
Options.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. In the Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings
box, click Trusted sites.
4. Click Sites.
5. Click to clear the Require server verification (https for all
sites in this zone check box.

Note If you are using Windows Vista, leave Protected Mode turned off
for this Trusted Sites Zone.
6. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following
navigation protocol, and then click Add:
money://
7. Click OK two times.

There were two KBs that I referenced, tho they had some overlap.

You could try installing into a different folder. Pay attention
during the install if you want to choose a non-default location.

Then see if you can open the Sample.mny in the new folder that you
installed into.

Yes, went through the whole darned document, reset all my security settings,
searched registry, installed on a clean boot. No change - update runs but
does not apply itself and every time I restart money it asks me whether I
wish to apply the patch again.

I also just tried to install a different version of Money (French version)
and that will not update either.

On my laptop I can install, update, uninstall, reinstall, update, uninstall
without problem and the setups on the two machines are largely similar.

No - I have OneCare - but I don't think this is the problem, as I also have
it on my laptop.

Thanks - I followed all those suggestions but still no update.

This is really frustrating as I have previously successfully applied the
update on the computer - but I then uninstalled.

Was that "installation failed" and not ""installer failed"?

See if either of these help:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316870/en-us

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827814/en-us helps.

If/when you do get it installed, Go to help-> About, and write down
your serial number. This may be useful for future email or phone
help from Microsoft Support.

I've already tried that a couple of times - but just to be sure I did it
again.

I install MSMoney, start the set up process etc as usual. Then I get the
dialogue screen asking if I wish to upgrade. I accept. The PC downloads,
unpacks, and starts to install the patch. Then it pops up with a message
saying "installation failed - check that you have 100mb free and that you
are connected to internet". Both conditions are true, btw.

Create a new XP Administrative user and install as that user.

If that does not do it, describe what happens during install and how
that differs from the expected.

I'm afraid it still won't upgrade.

I uninstalled, deleted every trace of MSMoney from my PC, ran windows
installer cleanup, did a clean boot, installed Money - and it still won't
upgrade!!

Either open the sample.mny file in your install folder, or let
Money 2005 create a new Money file, clicking Decline in the
process. It will do an update. Close Money. Then open Money and
check that Help-> About... says you then have version 14.0.*.1105.

Then you should be able to open or restore your existing files.

Using Vista?

Find the sample.mny file in your install folder. That may be
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2005". Copy sample.mny file to
your Documents folder in Vista. In Windows Explorer, right-click
that file and choose RunAsAdministrator. It will do an update.
Close Money. Reboot the computer. Then open Money and check that
Help-> About... says you then have version 14.0.*.1105.

Make sure your .mny and .mbf files are in your Documents folder, or
at least *not* in your ProgramFiles or Windows folders. Then you
should be able to File-> Open or Restore your existing files.

Well I've created new files several times, declined and/or accpeted the
update in just about every combination of new file or old file I can conjure
up and it still does not work.

Decline the online services agreement after the EULA, which effectively
forces you to use a Live ID.

<mini-rant> I think it's really reckless for MS to trick users into using a
Live ID with something that looks like a license agreement that must be
accepted, which then puts users in the repeated (sometimes daily)
inconvenience of not being able to sign in online (which caused MS to lose a
customer I know of who was simultaneously test-driving Money and Quicken
back in 2004), and every year or two locks users out of their files
entirely... </mini-rant

What do you mean click "Decline"? Do you mean decline the update?

If my guess is correct, then that didn't work either.

Default Can't apply update to MS Money 2005

hello,

I can't apply the automatic update to MS Money 2005. It tries to apply
itself every time I start MS Money 2005, but fails.

I have followed the suggestions on the MVP Money FAQs - ie tried to open a
new administrator account on the PC - but none of this worked.

I *think* it may be because I previously had MS Money 2005 France installed
on the PC. Although I have completely deleted MS Money France, I think there
may be something left over in the system somewhere. Any suggestions?
