I'd work on coming up with better customizations of the reports...

Thanks Dick and Cal for the replys.
Yes, it's reports in MS Money that I have in mind, and also TaxCut software.
I'd like IRA contributions and all deductible items to be recognized, to
make tax time less of a chore. ....Dave

Expenses make you poorer. This is why Buy Investment/CD is a "Special
Category" and operates a lot more like a Transfer in terms of things like
reporting. (I'm guessing that how you want to see this reported is why you
think you want to do this.) Buying the shares for the IRA did not make you
poorer. It just moved the money from one pocket to another. It didn't reduce
your net worth. Expenses reduce your net worth. Best practice is to do it
the way you have been doing it.

One other complication: there is no other way to change money in a Cash
Account into shares in an Investment Account besides Buy Investment/CD.

First, make an extra copy or backup of your file in case you want to
undo something.

Then experiment with Tools-> Find&Replace to see if you can search
for transactions with a given characteristic and change the
category.

Default category for IRA purchases

I'm using Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe 17.0

When I log an entry for an IRA purchase, it's currently categorized as
"Buy Investment/ CD". This category is found under "special" in the
transaction form drop down list in the account. I'm thinking about
recategorizing IRA purchases as an expense instead. When I go to the list of
categories "special" isn't displayed. When I try to edit individual
transactions in the IRA account. a window pops up for price and total etc.,
but categories aren't included. I'd like to move all transactions to the new
category. Thanks for any suggestions.
