I suggest the use of a USB flash drive for scheduled backups. As to why a backup could be needed, it's hard to know. Power glitches could be a cause, but some unusual event the software did not handle correctly seems more likely. Let's let your use of a backup motivate folks into reviewing their backup situation. In M+: Tools-> Settings-> BackupSettings I suggest checking x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money Save in [a place on your hard drive ]. It is best to Browse to a location rather than typing the path. x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] (this assumes you have a lot of unused space on that big drive) x Perform scheduled backups every _28_ days Save in [a USB flash drive location] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] Then periodically, perhaps each month or three, copy your latest backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive rather than floppies. They are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof). * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup files. You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone. - quote - > One reason could be that my original file was Money 98. | Thanks for the reply. I got it to work by finding a money backup file and choosing the "program from the list" to open it with. This happend to be Money Plus. The question is how did the file corrupt or the program fail so that I could not open the original??? One reason could be that my original file was Money 98. I had to install Money 2005 to convert so that I could convert again to Money Plus. Maybe the computer was confused as to what version of money to run......I have now uninstalled Money 05 and lets see if this problem pops up again. | Guess what? I have just had Money Plus fail to initialize on startup and when I try to open my money file from explorer I get the password issue. I have NOT forgotten my password. I'm running a new PC with Vista Home Premium and purchased Money online. This seems to be more than a one time issue in the world. Has anyone figured this out??? Thanks! OK. Your symptom is that using Vista with Money Plus, you get this> OS. > I can certainly call cust support, but you and I both know what their policy > is on fixing password issues. message when you try to open your file" "To open your file, enter your password". You have a box to enter a password. This is a conventional password, and it is not a Live ID. Which best describes your situation? 1. you had a conventional password, and it just does not recognize it? 2. you had no password, and wonder why it asks for a password? 3. that you had a Live ID (in the form of an email address and password) on the file and wonder why it is not asking for that? Try right-clicking the launch icon and choosing RunAsAdministrator. That should address any permissions problem. - quote - > I have attempted to restore an older backup (one from June, well before the

| Vista, but the software was functioning fine for the last two months on that OS. I can certainly call cust support, but you and I both know what their policy is on fixing password issues. I have attempted to restore an older backup (one from June, well before the problem began) with the same results. My next step is going to be to reinstall the software but I don't expect that to work because I believe that somehow the problem is with the file itself. "the EXACT problem"? ;-)OK. XP or Vista? When you open a file, maybe a new one or Sample.mny, write down the serial number from Help-> About. Have that available as your product ID if you contact support. - quote - > I cannot log in offline, which makes me think that somehow the file has been
Online or offline -- neither works?> corrupted. Maybe you did not try restoring an older backup file either? If you do so, don't restore to the default location. | I don't have a paid copy of Money 2007. Only paid for the Plus Deluxe. I cannot log in offline, which makes me think that somehow the file has been corrupted. It seems as though I am going to have to go through the painstaking process of rebuilding my file from scratch, but the fact that I'm not the only one who has experience this problem concerns me that there may be security issues with the program. | Odd, I am having a similar problem. Runnin XP-SP2 Money 2007 All worked well until I tried to open money this morning. Now I am getting an error saying that either my e-mail address or password is incorrect. I can log in to all live.com sites using the same e-mail address and password. Also can open my passport using the same information with no probs. Tried restoring backup files from as far back as March with the same error. | I think I figured out what was different. Before I was using the "restore backup" command from the file menu. When I got it to finally work, I used the "open" command but selecting a backup data file. My main file didnt work still using this approach but was able to restore from a backup using '07. I am good to go. Thank you for all your help! Now I can pay my bills! Quick. Make a copy of that *.mny file, and the good *.mbf you used,> the 2nd one allowed me to enter my Live ID. The file restored but cannot tell > you why it was any different from before.. You will need to upgrade to use the *.mny file you restored to using Money Plus. You may, however, be able to replicate your restore of that backup file using Money 2007. If you upgrade, you can wait until you have used your trial period if you want tho. |

| Great to hear. I strongly suspect that the other files were corrupted (possibly beyond recovery) and Money interpreted that corruption as encryption and was asking for the password to decrypt it. It is still possible that this restored backup file might have some damage as well (but not enought to stop Money from opening it). If you experience unexpected problems when using the file in Money (error messages, unexpected results, etc), in addition to the repair options, it may be worthwhile to consider exporting your accounts as QIF files and importing them into a brand new "clean" Money file. I'm afraid that Money 07 will not recognize a Money Plus file, so the best thing would be to upgrade to Money Plus to use that file. Cal will probably now give you his advice about having a deep backup strategy :-) -Mark "Steve" <Steve[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:7BCC479B-6D0F-4BE7-819C-B88E8DF64376[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > AWESOME!!! > I tried to restore all my backups files using Plus Deluxe again and found > the 2nd one allowed me to enter my Live ID. | AWESOME!!! I tried to restore all my backups files using Plus Deluxe again and found the 2nd one allowed me to enter my Live ID. The file restored but cannot tell you why it was any different from before.. The original data file still doesnt work not do the other 2 backups but thats fine. Now that this file has been upgraded to Plus Deluxe does that mean I will need to upgrade to this version or can I continue using 07? | I did find my first post. Didnt see the more button at the bottom of the thread. I already tried installing Plus Deluxe on another computer. I tried the main file as well as all 3 backups. No go either. I will try the safe mode later today when I have access to my machines. When I tried before I was not using safe mode w/networking. | Ok was able to spend more time on this yesterday. Posted a response but for some reason it didn't show up. I did all the things you mentioned. Nothing helped...still the same problem. The only thing I wasn't able to do was boot in safe mode and try it. The Money application would failed to load. I also downloaded the new Money Plus trial and it is doing the same thing, saying my password was incorrect. With Money Plus trial I was able to create a new file using my Live ID so this is definitely a local password issue which is weird because I have always used my Live ID. I don't understand why it would revert to using a local password. I am guessing this is why Money keeps complaining its wrong. I am stumped and frustrated but do appreciate everyones input "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, Steve wrote: > > Moved all files to a flash drive. | Ok Cal, I was finally able to get back to this. Busy weekend. No luck on anything you wanted me to try. No matter what, its asking me for a local password. The only thing that I was not able to try was starting up in Safe Mode. It would error out trying to open Money 2007. I also install the Money Plus trial version and it did the exact same thing. Using the trial version I was able to create a whole NEW file and was able to login online via Live ID. But still no luck accessing my current file for 08. - quote - > Another idea that comes to mind is to try installing to another
