| Cal may have caught what Ken and I didn't: you are talking about MSN Money the online tihng, not Microsoft Money the locally installed application? What I would do is to consider using Microsoft Money. You could play with it with the free 60-day trial and maybe let that be your experimental file. If I did that, I would find your current "my portfolio.mny" on your drive. Copy that file to a file named deg1231.mny (or some such) in your Documents/MyDocuments folder. Download the Money Deluxe (Essentials will not do it for you) trial. http://www.microsoft.com/money/freetrial_deluxe.mspx Have it convert deg1231.mny. Experiment for a few hours, 60 days, or buy the non-trial and keep going. In Microsoft Money, you can create an unlimited number of files with different *.mny filenames. You can remove the e-mail address on any of those files if you want. |

| Hi deg1231, Here is what I do.... Create a copy of my data file, Open it, do all my 'what if's', then switch back to my original data file. Quite easy to accomplish, really. Locate your data file, it will have a .mny extension. Right click your data file, choose copy, move mouse pointer to vacant area on screen, right click, choose paste. This action should create a copy of your data file, in fact it should say "Copy of xxxxx.mny". To open the copy, Double click it. Note: Money remembers the last file closed is the one it will open. To have money remember to open your original data file you will have to open/close it. Go to your original data file and double click it. Hope this helps, Ken <deg1231[at]gmail.com> wrote in message news:3d953f55-509a-4d69-a8ee-aead2dea33df[at]c58g2000hsc.googlegroups.com... | I have my investment portfolio on MSN Money's Deluxe Portfolio | Manager, but I would like to play some "what if's" by creating a new | user ID, importing a backup file of my original account, then | "pretending" to sell and reinvest in other positions. | | I thought this would be pretty easy to do, but when I try to import | the backup file into the new account, it says that the e-mail and | password I'm using on MSN doesn't match the one in the backup file, so | it doesn't let me do it. | | Is there any way around this, or do I actually have to spend days re- | entering all of my information into the "what if" account if I want to | do this? | I'm not sure exactly what's going on here, but here's what I'd try. Don't do anything with backup/restore. Copy your .MNY file to a new copy, say "Copy of MyMoney.MNY". Do your What If in that copy. <deg1231[at]gmail.com> wrote in message news:3d953f55-509a-4d69-a8ee-aead2dea33df[at]c58g2000hsc.googlegroups.com... - quote - > I have my investment portfolio on MSN Money's Deluxe Portfolio > Manager, but I would like to play some "what if's" by creating a new > user ID, importing a backup file of my original account, then > "pretending" to sell and reinvest in other positions. > I thought this would be pretty easy to do, but when I try to import > the backup file into the new account, it says that the e-mail and > password I'm using on MSN doesn't match the one in the backup file, so > it doesn't let me do it. > Is there any way around this, or do I actually have to spend days re- > entering all of my information into the "what if" account if I want to > do this? | I have my investment portfolio on MSN Money's Deluxe Portfolio Manager, but I would like to play some "what if's" by creating a new user ID, importing a backup file of my original account, then "pretending" to sell and reinvest in other positions. I thought this would be pretty easy to do, but when I try to import the backup file into the new account, it says that the e-mail and password I'm using on MSN doesn't match the one in the backup file, so it doesn't let me do it. Is there any way around this, or do I actually have to spend days re- entering all of my information into the "what if" account if I want to do this? (My current portfolio has 100's of transactions.) It would seem to me that there should be some way to edit the .mbf file by entering the original e-mail address (user id) and password then specifying a *new* e-mail address and password. |
