| A good point to be unambiguous about. I was assuming we were talking about the ones the OP mentioned, but always good to be clear. Of course, using Sample.MNY in Vista presents its own issues. | OK, I took both of the .mny files and "sent to" Documents. I was able to open them both there and make some changes which were saved. But I don't want to guarantee the problem is solved because I've thought it was solved before until I opened it up the next day. So will report back to you after I try to open it tomorrow and see what happens. I will re-enter the data rather than using restore and risking some of the old problems/settings creeping back in. I'm guessing I should also now delete the .mny folders that are in Program Files? I was a little nervous about doing that, but I guess it should be OK since they're both working out of the Documents folder. When I click on File in Money, it shows 4 files - 2 in Documents and 2 in Program Files. (more comments below) Thanks again for your help. Yes, but I downloaded the program directly onto my computer that had Vista> Didn't you upgrade to Vista? But I had been using it successfully on this computer with Vista for over a month with no problems. - quote - > Post back to let us know if this gets your issue sorted out. |

These were both 2500 - 3500 KB in size. files, it will offer to restore them to where they wer backed up from. If they were backed up from the files you mention next, Restore will "restore" them but this will not work for reasons soon to be discussed. You should never open or double click on these unless you NEED to revert to your last saved backup. I suggest you delete these items from your Recent Items list by r-clicking on them in the Recent Items list and selecting delete. This will just deletethe shortcut in Recent Items--it won't delete the files the shortcut points to. - quote - > Then, in the Program Files folder, there is one called "Family Money.mny"
This is the exact bad thing we've been discussing. These files are your data> and another with my business. This file is very large 20,732 KB (12,288 KB > for the business file) files and MUST be moved to Documents or some place like it for your changes to "stick". The problem here is that Vista will assume that you really shouldn't be changing stuff in these folders. It will humor you and let you think you are doing it, then it puts things back the way they were after you are done. Move these files to Documents... Once you've moved them, you can open them in Money by double-clicking on them in their new location. - quote - > Thanks again for your help. I'm trying to figure out why if I haven't made
Didn't you upgrade to Vista? Alternately is the "restore" scenario posited> any changes, this would start happening all of a sudden! above. Post back to let us know if this gets your issue sorted out. |

| You are calling the .MNY files "backup" files? If so, that's what you need to make sure is in your Documents folder. Those are the data files. (Kinda like Word or Notepad or Excel or similar, Money stores your data in a "document" file. For Money, these are .MNY extension files as in "MyMoneyDataFile.MNY" or similar.) Money backup files--made with File|Backup or the Tools|Settings|Backup Settings--are .MBF files. So, for the files in Recent Items, if you r-click on them and select Properties from the menu that pops up, what are the complete entries in the "Target" text box? Can you paste those entries into your reply? Somehow we'll get to the bottom of this. I hope. | I confess to not being computer literate enough to know what a Data File would look like. I checked in C drive, Program Files and found the Money Program File. Is that what you mean? When I went to Recent Items, all that was in there that was Money related was the two backup files (the family money and my business money file). Also in C drive, there was a ProgramData folder and in that was a Microsoft folder but it was empty. Or do I do what Cal Learner suggested and move the .mny file? Please excuse my illiteracy....and thanks so much for your help and patience! "Dick Watson" wrote: - quote - > You need the DATA FILE in that location. The backup there would be good. | You need the DATA FILE in that location. The backup there would be good. The DATA FILE there is essential. You need to figure out where the DATA FILE is located and move it to Documents or Desktop. If you look at r-click Properties of the Money data file in you Recent Items you should find out where it is now. So assuming you are not 110% sure as Dick suspects, close Money.> folder. I entered one change, exited, came back and the change was saved. > Hooray! Then move your *.mny file to your Documents folder, or copy it to another name there. | Last night, I went in and changed the backup location to the Documents folder. I entered one change, exited, came back and the change was saved. Hooray! Went back in and re-entered (for almost an hour) all the data that had not saved before. Exited - went back in and it was saved. hooray! Then, this afternoon, when I went in, all the changes were gone once again (including the change to backup to the Documents folder.) Is the program changing to a pumpkin at midnight? I do have the backup from last night that has all my data, so can restore it, but don't want to until I know this problem is fixed for good. Any other ideas? | Make 110% certain that your data file is stored somewhere you can write to like your Documents folder. Do NOT store your data file in Program Files\Microsoft Money or similar. | I have used Money for years. I bought a new computer with Vista a couple of months ago and downloaded Money Plus Deluxe. I've been using it with no problems. Now a couple of days ago, I entered some info and exitted. It said it was saving my backup file. When I opened it again, the changes were not in there. I have 2 files on it, one for home and one for my business. I regularly toggle between the two with no problem. This is really frustrating, I have entered some of the information 3 times now and it is still not saving it. I have never had a problem like this with Money. Any ideas? |
