| Cal and Dick, Thanks for the additional informtion. I installed and activated Money on the new computer, downloaded the updates and everything seems to be working fine. According to Money Help - About, my version is Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe. I also notice that the serial number shown on the Help - About page is different between the two computers but that they both show the same expiration date which is twenty-four months after the date Money was first installed on the FIRST (older) computer. This all seems to me to be consistent with your posts. Thanks again. | Let's be careful in this thread: M+, nee M08, IS activated online and it DOES keep track of activations against some kind of hash key generated on each machine. Supposedly you can call the phone number that comes up when it refuses and explain your situation. Money Plus has an activation system that you can activate on up to> I want to run Money on the new computer instead of the older one. If you need to replace one of those computers, I don't know how you would handle that. |

| Thanks very much for your reinforcement guys. I've never quite trusted the background banking enough to use it, choosing instead to get my downloads explicitly, but the reboot sounds like a good idea anyway - I'll do it just to be a little safer. Thanks again. (If I get in trouble, I'll let you know!) | I didn't see Bob Peel's reply before I wrote the above. So there's an answer to do they track the serial #s for updates. | It will also work if you install Money on the new computer first, and allow it to do it's first update (where it gets any updates from Microsoft), and then copy the data file from your old computer to your new computer. Then 'open' the copied money date file and you'll be ready. Having does this recently, there are a few minor settings that do not transfer with the Money data file, they are set to their default when you install anew. The ones I recall are Prompt to save a New Payee name, and Save electronic payments as drafts instead of sending immediately. And just the opposite happens in the backup file location, it does transfer with the Money data file. One thing to note for copying the old file, and this only applies if you do background backing (sync with banks, credit cards or FIs). Even though you close the Money GUI screen, if you have any background banking setup, the background banking processes will continue to open and update the Money data file after you close the Money GUI. The way to get a clean, closed money data file is to exit out of the Money GUI, reboot your computer and do not get back in the GUI screen after you reboot. In doing so you'll notice the Money has not updated the data file since you rebooted. - quote - > Will I still be legally licensed and get Money updates?
licensed on a per copy per device basis." and "11. TRANSFER TO ANOTHER DEVICE.I think you're fine. The end user license agreement says "The software is You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices." My guess is this works on the honor system, but they could very well be sophisticated here and cutoff updates on one system after you activate it on a new system. | That should work. Assuming new PC has Vista you need to follow the rules that have been posted here many times about making sure that .mny and .mbf files are somewhere where you have full access. MS do not have a database of serial numbers or whatever, in fact you don't have to register Money with MS. The blandishments to do so are solely so they can bombard you with spam - sorry important marketing messages! :-) -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. I do not respond to any emails that I have not specifically asked for. | I'm running Money 2008 and recently added a new computer to my home network. I want to run Money on the new computer instead of the older one. My plan is to move the Money database to the new computer, install Money on the new computer using the same installation disk I used before on the older computer and then use the new install to open the moved database on the new computer. I do NOT want to continue running Money on the older computer and will uninstall it when I'm sure everything is OK on the new computer. Should that work OK? Will I still be legally licensed and get Money updates? Thanks for any help. |
