JP: An update. You might not be able to check off the "Run this program as
admin" box in which case there might be an icon right under that which says
"show settings for all users". from that point, you have to enter your admin
password and should get a screen like the first one. From there, you can set
the "run this program as administrator" and hit OK.

JP, I had the similar problem with a different application in Vista and was
told the program is trying to write to the local file system, but does not
have the rights although the administrator account may or may not be logged
in.

Try this:

Copy a copy of the Microsoft Money icon to your desktop. Then, right click
on the icon. From the pop up menu, click on Properties, then click on the
Compatibility tab. Then click to select the "Run this program as an
administrator" check box. Then click the OK button to save the changes.

See if this helps.........would be curious to see if this fix works.

And, while we are at it, you aren't using IE8 betaware, are you?

It doesn't sound like you are...

On Vista, it will have problems with your data file pasted into Money's
folder.

It may even have problems with its own sample file in its folder. Try
copying the sample file to your desktop.

But I don't think it'll help. Sound like you have some more fundamental
problem.

You might want to open a support case directly with Microsoft on this one.

Good luck!

No, Money will not open its own sample file. I pasted my own Money file into
the Money folder and tried to open it but ended up with the same result. I
get about 1/2 second of the opening screen and then poof! its gone.

I uninstalled again and deleted all references (other than the registry),
installed Vista SP1, and reinstalled Money one more time. Same results.

Are we having fun yet?

Will Money open its own Sample data file? If not, reinstall. If so, then the
problem is in your data file.

Thanks for your reply.
1. I can't start/open the program [ref microsoft.com/kb/902466] to execute
a level 1 or 2 repair.
2. I've previously backed up the Money file to a USB drive but the
backed-up file will not open either.
3. The program won't open when choosing RunAsAdministrator.
4. Moving the files to Documents from Program Files does not fix problem.

There has to be some simple explanation for MS Money not to open when it has
worked perfectly in the past. Something in the registry gone whacko?

You could try to make a repaired version of your file. One way would
be to run salv.exe (level 2). This file may be at
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2006\MNYCoreFiles\salv.exe"
Alternatively http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902466 may help with
that.

Another way would be to restore a recent backup. You can do that by
opening Money by opening that recent backup file from Windows
Explorer.

Here are some notes on using Vista:

Be sure that your Money and backup files are moved to a spot that
you will have full privileges to, such as Documents.
If they are in a place like ProgramFiles, Vista will create an
impermanent copy of the file for the user to use, unless the user
explicitly right-clicks at launch and choose RunAsAdministrator
that time.

Right-click the Money icon and choose RunAsAdministrator to let
potential updates happen. Then reboot the computer.

-------------------------------------------- Note that Money 2006 defaults to keeping your latest 4 backups (you
can change the number). You might want to copy one or more of these
to other media such as a USB flash drive in case something happens
to your hard drive.

Default Money 2006

When attempting to open MS 2006 in Vista, the sign-in page starts briefly,
then disappears. I've reinstalled several times with the same result. Each
installation appeared normal.
