| Thanks for the additional tips: 1. I tried running Windows in Safe mode - did not help 2. I did not create a new admin user, but I did reset all of my security and privacy settings back to the default levels - did not help. 3. I may decide to purchase the new MS Money, but I am not currently very happy with this product or Microsoft support. If I do purchase the new version and convert, I will let you know if it works. After reading a lot about this issue, I am almost certain that this is a problem from Microsoft's end. The MS server update must have somehow dissociated the password from the file so that it doesn't even work locally. Like I mentioned before, I can open the backup file, and I can even login using my .NET username, so it must be a problem with my primary file and not the connection. In the past Microsoft issued a patch, but it is no longer available, and I don't expect them to issue a new one for a retired product. I have already spent several hours trying to fix this problem. I think I am just going to use the old backup and spend the time to bring it up to date. Thanks for your effort. | Cal, you certainly seem to know your stuff! I am having this exact same problem with Microsoft Money 2003. From reading Topaz's posts, I can see that 2004 is no longer supported, so I guess it's time for me to go and cry myself to sleep over finding help on 2003, but it's worth a try! I've been through nearly all of the microsoft support steps provided in the numerous posts above and on other sites (this has been the most useful by far). All that is left to do now is to re-install MS Money 2003 and keep my fingers crossed. Oh, and possibly download the latest version. I'm inclined to agree with Topaz's earlier comment; "Yeah, but I must be among the few who still use MS Money 2004.". Right now, I would imagine here is a very small number of people using MS Money 2003 or 2004, and an even smaller number of them will be using the passport sign-in. I would place bets on this being something at the Microsoft end, mainly because I haven't changed anything on my current setup in the last month or so, except the odd MS update. I'm hoping I'm wrong though! I'd love to wake up tomorrow and find it's all gone away and it was a problem with my router or something =D "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, Kevin wrote: > > Thanks for the tips. > > Unfortunately, I cannot sign-in to the file to access the password > > management. Has anyone recovered their data by upgrading to a newer version? asking to respond. But if that does not happen soon, you may want to try the Money Plus Deluxe free trial yourself, if you are in the US. You could do this test with one of these ways if you think you may want to go back to Money 2004: 1. Install the trial on another computer. If this is a borrowed computer that you would not want to leave data on, you could leave the *.mbf and *.mny files on a USB flash drive. 2. Make a System Restore point and then install the trial. during that install, pay attention to deselect the selection for Money to uninstall earlier versions during this install. If you decide to go back, you could just restore the Restore Point. 3. Be prepared to reinstall Money 2004. 4. Install onto a virtual machine if you know how. Here are some things to try without using the trial: 1. boot into safe mode with networking. Start Money 2004, and see if you can sign in. The theory would be that if you are running something that is blocking access to the Passport server, then that thing probably would not be running. 2. Copy your *.mny file to a USB flash drive that has the FAT file system. That way ownership will not be a problem. Create a new XP Administrative user. As that new user, try to open the *.mny file from the flash drive. The theory is that if you have changed some IE7 setting that is blocking your access, the new user will have those settings at default levels. - quote - > "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: > > In microsoft.public.money, Kevin wrote: > > > > I am also now having this problem with Money 2004. | Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, I cannot sign-in to the file to access the password management. I can run a restore on the backup file, but for some reason I would lose about 6 months of data. I thought it backed up the file every time you close the program, but for whatever reason, my backup file is really old. Has anyone recovered their data by upgrading to a newer version? When you restore, don't restore to the "default location". Instead, Browse to your Documents folder and choose a new name. |

| I am also now having this problem with Money 2004. I know that I am entering the correct name and password, but I get an error, "The sign-in name you entered is no longer associated with this file." If I purposely enter the wrong username/password, I get a different error, "Your sign-in attempt was unsuccessful. Please try again." My only other option is to click "skip sign-in" at the bottom of the screen, but it still prompts me for a password. I know this problem occurred a couple of years ago and MS issued a fix, but they no longer support this version of Money. Has anyone with this problem successfully upgraded to a newer version of Money and recovered their data? Please help. "topaz" wrote: - quote - > Hi, > All of a sudden, I can't open My Money file. | This exact issue started happening to me today. Topaz, did you every get your problem worked out? Two weeks ago, I accessed my MS Money file with no issues. I shut it down properly and it did the normal backup to a secondary location. Today, when I started Money 2004, it came up with a blank sign-in name. I entered my credentials and it gave me this error. I tried restoring from the backup location and it failed the credential check as well and wouldn't let me restore. Thanks, Conway "Mark" wrote: - quote - > Since a new file worked with your existing Passport, that means that it is > not a problem with Money but is file specific (as Steve mentioned) > If a restored backup says the "user name" is not associated to this file > then that may be the problem > Normally (I don't recall for sure if Money 2004 did this), when you open or > restore a file that has been locked with a Passport it will have the sign in > name already filled in. | Since a new file worked with your existing Passport, that means that it is not a problem with Money but is file specific (as Steve mentioned) If a restored backup says the "user name" is not associated to this file then that may be the problem Normally (I don't recall for sure if Money 2004 did this), when you open or restore a file that has been locked with a Passport it will have the sign in name already filled in. You cannot change that since that is the credentials that were used to lock the file. You need to use the password for that sign in that last worked. In general, you can use the "work offline" option on the Money 2004 sign in screen (NOT Internet Explorer's option to Work Offline) and sign in to Money "offline" with the last password that worked and then you can go to File - Password Manager and Change the sign in (to the same Passport again with the new password, if desired). Another thing to note is that if your original Passport had problems or was deleted by Passport and even if you recreate it with the exact same sign in name, it is a completely different Passport (it has a different Unique ID). That could be another reason why the old files won't sign in. -Mark "topaz" <topaz[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:BC8FD896-A283-437C-9B97-7D2BD1CAA2AB[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > Hi Mark, > I attempted the msxml re-registration but this did not help me. > I have created a new money file with my existing passport and password and > this file can be accessed. | Hi Mark, I attempted the msxml re-registration but this did not help me. I have created a new money file with my existing passport and password and this file can be accessed. Strange. I don't think there is a problem with money detecting an internet connection b/c I reinstalled MS Money 2004 and ran the update with a sample file. Had no problem getting updates. I have only one money file. How could it get locked with another sign-in? I only have one sign-in also. I did do a password reset thinking that this might be the problem. I changed my password to something new tried it, didn't work in Money (but did on hotmail), so I changed it back to the original password (which doesn't work in money but continues to work in hotmail). When I do a file restore from backup and attempt to sign-in in "offline" mode it asks me for the password on the file. But the error message says that the user name is not associated with the file. I have NOD32 anti-virus and firewall. Any known issues with MS Money 2004? I wonder if the anit-virus is a problem with the passport. I'll check and let you all know. -- topaz "Mark" wrote: - quote - > It seems that doing the msxml re-registration has worked most of the time > for these issues. | It seems that doing the msxml re-registration has worked most of the time for these issues. So hopefully he did try all of the options in that article. I don't recall, did he ever try creating a NEW file (File New) and see if he could add that same sign in name (or a new one) to that new file? That would help eliminate if it was a file issue versus an issue with Money not detecting the internet. I strongly suspect either: - Wrong file being opened (one that is locked with a different sign in) - Problems with Money "detecting" the internet connection See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899935/en-us - Or a change was made to that sign in (for example a password reset or changed password) prior to this problem starting with the Money 2004 file. -Mark "Cal Learner-- MVP" <via_newsgroup[at]please.tnx> wrote in message news:u4ah14d4j4rvfk1it8pt1vgvmqnnk2jbvo[at]4ax.com... - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, Mark wrote: > > That's a really old problem that doesn't exist anymore (i.e. if it was > > your > > situation, you would have encountered it back in 2004). > > > Your solution is likely in one of the steps in the following Microsoft > > Knowledge Base article: > > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891338/en-us > Incredibly, on 26 Apr 2008 he said "none of the suggestions in that > link worked." |

| That's a really old problem that doesn't exist anymore (i.e. if it was your situation, you would have encountered it back in 2004).
