There is no "one right way." It generally depends on how much trouble you
want to go to and how frequent/many of these things you have going on.

Lately I've taken to using my expense category "Miscellaneous : Deposit /
Credit" and a Classification Family : [name of kid] to record both
sides--the expense and any money I get back--of these things. Then I can
report the category and classification to get a statement with running
balance.
