They have to be the same localized version or you will not be able to
convert. For instance, US can only convert to US---you could not convert a
UK version to US.

Default Converting from Money 2001 to Money 2004

I have a friend who was using Money 2001 and it was
working just fine. He decided to get Money 2004 Small
Business edition. We installed the software, but when we
try to open his old data from Money 2001, an error
messages pops up and says that the file was created on a
non compatible version. Does anyone have any clues on
how we can fix this problem?
