Yes - Bobb - .. Now, finally just the one backup overwrites when I save. It
was all because of the path being wrong from my backup file that I had when
I was running it on my XP machine. Boy that was becoming a BIG pain. Glad
Cal reminded me of the path.

My reason for asking is that when I went from M2004 to M2006, I had (
still do) same issue as him with the multiple backup files and thought a
program "feature" I could not avoid. We had this discussion before :

and I've just "learned to live with it".

When I went to M2006 (XP) , and ran a (manual or automatic - didn't
matter) backup, it did NOT overwrite the March2008.mbf, but it created an
additional March2008_todays_date.mbf file. If I put it in 'Auto' I have
one per day. ( "# to keep box" never worked for me in M2006), so I have it
prompt me at exit and I've done manual backups weekly. Disk space isn't a
problem - just the clutter of having 50+ files per year added to overhead.
( Or 200+ if on AUTO)

With M2004, I used to backup my Money.mny file to a "YEAR folder on D:\",
so I had the current file ( in C:\money) and on my D:\Backups Folder ( as
March2008 for example). M2004 used to "overwrite" the file on my D drive -
so I had one copy of D:\Backups Folder\2008\March2008.mbf. Every month I
would change the filename, so in that folder I would have:
D:\Backups Folder\2004\Jan2004.mbf.
D:\Backups Folder\2004\Feb2004.mbf
D:\Backups Folder\2004\March2004.mbf etc
not a different backup from every day - as I currently get if I put M2006
in auto.

So CAN I have it automatically OVERWRITE to leave
me with just one backup file as I exit:
D:\Backups Folder\2008\Month2008.mbf ?

I suggest you make the SaveIn field to be a place in your
"C:\Users\userName\Documents" folder and *not*
C:\Documents and Settings\userName\My Documents".

Browse to set the location.

Then delete all of the older *.mbf files that you don't want. Money
2006 will only delete one backup file as it creates the new one. You
can have Windows Explorer sort by date to help with that.

And finally, I would encourage you to keep more than one backup.
Disk space is cheap. If something were to go wrong and you were to
save a backup, you would overwrite your only good recent backup with
a problem. The Money 2006 backups incorporate a datestamp as part of
the filename.

Hmmm, weird, because my experience has been M2006 has always followed my
instructions in regards to keeping only 1 copy and it always either
overwrote the existing copy that was there prior to the saving, or it just
deleted it and saved the current, I don't know for sure which. And this was
the way it was in XP, XP PRO, as well as earlier versions of Windows. All I
did before while using XP or earlier version, was after saving, I went to
the directory it was setup to save in, right clicked it and chose copy, went
to my system back up drive and put the copy in a specific directory set up
for my money back up file. Almost every day I use my debit card, or do
something to affect my total in my account, therefore I enter it into my
money file. Now, with Vista since it continues to save ALL copies, I have
to physically look at the properties of each file to find out which is the
most current (so I know which I just saved), otherwise I'm copying the wrong
file to my back up drive. What a PAIN!!!!

I've got money set up to backup money file automatically when I close the
program and it is set for keeping only 1 copy. In XP the way Money handled
that is although there was already a backup in the Documents folder, when it
saved, only the newest backup copy remained in the Documents folder.
However with Vista it is keeping the old copy as well as any future copies
it makes as I close the program. Does anyone know what is up with this?
And maybe how I can solve it?
