Default Re: Multiple payees with same name...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the curly braces {} feature that makes one
payee name in Money appear as multiple entries:

Hess {Main Street}
Hess {10th St}
Hess {I76 Exit 50}

Info here:
http://umpmfaq.info/faq.html#Q65
and here also:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822398/en-us (see the Note at the end of the
Resolution section)

But for your case below, assuming you're talking about downloading
transactions from your bank or from a CC, and if you enter the transaction in
the register before the download as "Hess" (or even after, provided you don't
accept the transaction until you manually enter it and manually match it),
then the downloaded transaction will match to Hess if you tweak the
PayeeRulesManager as described above.

Matching multiple gasoline station name variation to one payee name has been
working fine for me for several years. In looking in the PayeeRulesManager, I
have 45 different gas stations raw payee name downloads that have accumulated
over time, and they all match to one payee name.

I handled this by just creating payees for Amoco/BP Station, Exxon/Mobil Station, Chevron/Texaco Station. That way it doesn't matter what station I use. I experimented with NoBrand Station, but we only go to one so I just use its name. Makes it easier especially if you have no real loyalty to a brand or station.

Hello. It's been awhile since I used Money but I just downloaded the trial of
Plus because I'm sick of Quicken. However, I'm finding out that Microsoft has
crippled their software since I last used it.

Is it possible to have multiple payees with the same name? For instance, if
I purchase gas at 3 different Hess stations, can they all just become Hess? I
haven't found a way to do this. I find it hard to believe this isn't possible.

Thank You.

To reduce the number of existing payees, go to
Banking-> AccountTools-> Categories&Payees-> Payees ; select a
payee and use Move to combine payees. This is better in most cases
than Delete. Advanced Find&Replace may also be more useful in
consolidating large numbers of similar payees.

Tools-> Settings-> OnlineServices-> ReplacePayeeNames...
enables replacement of payees with names you have used.
Banking-> AccountTools-> Categories&Payees-> Payees-> PreferredPayeeNames
shows how downloaded names are translated into Payees.

Also click on GoToPayeeRulesManager. Your downloaded transactions
may come with some generic term where the Payee should be.
Excluded Payee Names identifies words and phrases that should be
ignored from the payee field (e.g., check, deposit). Add words
that are generically added by your bank. Unfortunately there are
no wildcards, so check 334, check 335, and check 336 will each be
treated as potential new payee names. Set
Tools-> Settings-> OnlineServiceSettings-> ShowStandardizedPayeeNames
to combine payees that differ only by a number and/or punctuation.
This may work better after you have combined payees from previous
downloads. So if you defined a payee "Hess", then "Hess #1234"
should match to that. Note that if it is "Hess Denver #2345" you
should change the payee to "Hess" before accepting the transaction.
Thereafter Money should remember that translation.

addresses payee match problems.
