You don't need to. You may want to.

If you want to see taxable CG/loss is for your stock to plan what
to sell, in some versions that would be
Taxes-> CapitalGainsEstimator-> GetStarted-> EstimateCapitalGainsTax

Click ResetValues to update the current stock price.

Different versions have the estimator, but the clicks may vary.

The unrealized gain column will have values without regard to
dividends. If you enter a proposed quantity to sell for various
stocks, Money will summarize the effect at the bottom.

When you prepare your taxes be sure that Long Term and Short Term
Gains are checked in the boxes. The information is indeed sent to
your taxes. If you check to export your tax data for use with any
tax software program, the info goes into the .txf file for import.

Default Finding cost basis

I am trying to find the cost basis for several mutual funds I entered
manually, and I need to enter the cost basis into my online brokerage. The
shares were purchased between April 2006 and December 2007, and the shares
transferred in Dec 2007. Because of reinvested dividends, I have both short
and long term shares.

The only reporting I have found shows a total cost basis, but that won't be
accurate if I sell some of the short term shares.
