Save the Money file and backups that you have on other media such as> properly. I had created several manual backups whilst working on the file as > I was inputting alot of data (a days worth). See if you can open Sample.mny from your install folder. If you can't, then it points to the problem being with the installation rather than the file. You would probably want to reinstall Money. Actually you would hope the problem is with the install rather than your backup files. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182608/en-us may offer an idea for you. You might install a newer version on a different computer or a virtual machine if you were able to do that. You could start with the Money 2004 trial described on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913108/en-us if your file is from the US. If that cannot read your existing US file or backups, then expect the problem to be with the files. That would also be your path if you wanted to upgrade to a new version. |

| Hi Cal Learner. Really appreciate your taking time to respond. I'm running MS Money 99, which seems to backup to the same backup file everytime unless you manually change the file name. Anyway .... I did try to restore my backup and it said that a file *.tmp did not exit properly. I had created several manual backups whilst working on the file as I was inputting alot of data (a days worth). These backup's were done periodically whilst working on my main data file. Each of these subsequent backups has the same problem with the * in *.tmp being a different set of alpha/numerics. I also did some research on the net and it suggested deleting all temp internet files and files in %temp%, rebooting the pc and then trying again. I did this, to no avail. I did wonder if MS Money was getting the data from my machines registery - so tried opening all files on a different machine. Same problems were encountered and therefore, it seems the problem exists within the files themselves. Thus I was wondering if there was anyway these files could be manipulated or tricked into believing they had been closed properly. What do you think? Backup files are named *.mbf, and newer versions incorporate the date and time as part of the filename in addition to the timestamps on the file. By default newer versions keep backups for your last 4 exits. I increased that number since I have a lot of space on my hard drive. You can also start Money by having windows open the backup from Windows Explorer. |

| ..I have been working on a money file. I went to open this file again and got the message 'Money has detected that you did not close the file "........." before exiting. Money now needs to verify the information in your file. If your file is large, this may take a few minutes. Do you want to do this now. I click yes. It then takes me to the Open File dialogue box. I tried reopening my original file and it does the same as above. I then try opening a backup and get the message that *.tmp file did not exit properly. How can I get the database to change its status so that it can be accessed again. Any suggestions. Thanks Kerrie |
