As Lynn replied, record for the expense from whatever account it's paid from. Sometimes I deposit reimbursement checks. Other times I pay expenses directly with a special credit card provided for that purpose. In the latter case, I just record a medical expense directly in the FSA account. Make sure your FSA account is 'in the budget' when you create it. Otherwise paycheck deposits to it show up as transfers out of budget, and your expenses from the FSA account are ignored. -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL |

Yes, when you pay your doctor, record that as an expense (category:> In Money, I know I need to set up an FSA account and transfer money to it. > But how exactly do the payments/reimbursements work? Medical) in whatever account you're actually paying from (checking account, credit card, etc.) Then, when you receive the reimbursement, record a transfer from your FSA account to wherever you're depositing the reimbursement (checking, savings, etc.). Just think of modeling the transactions the way they actually occur in real life. I use a similar approach whenever I have any of my money "in escrow" like a real mortgage escrow account, or when I'm expecting a rebate for a purchase, or when someone borrows money from me. |

| I have money taken from my paycheck each week and placed into my FSA. In Money, I know I need to set up an FSA account and transfer money to it. But how exactly do the payments/reimbursements work? For instance, if I pay $10 to my doctor for a copay, do I pay that out of my checking or my FSA? I know that when my insurance company reimburses me the $10, I transfer that $10 from my FSA to my checking. Or at least I thought that's how it should be set up. I know this is probably basic accounting, but I am drawing a blank here. Thanks. |
