I meant recategorizing each individual transaction would be too burdensome.
That is why I recommended doing what you said.

And less easy to split them back apart...

Default RE: Too Many Categories

Starting out with too many categories is not necessarily a bad thing. Now
that you have some data you can look at your expenses for each category.
This allows you to see which categories should be combined because the
amounts are too small to be worth tracking. As the other responses have
explained, it's easy to delete categories and move the associated
transactions to a different existing category or to a new category.

It's not that hard. If you move the category on the categories page,
all the transactions in the moved category get merged into the
surviving category. Use Find/Replace if you wish to selectively move
some transactions, then merge the bulk by simply moving the category.

Trying to recategorize all your transactions would be too burdensome. Do as
Carl suggested and move some of the categories into other more general
categories you have selected or renamed.

If you don't already have a Categories Shortcut, I suggest you add
one.

Select a Category, and then, at the bottom, click Move (or Delete).
Money will ask what category to move the existing transactions to.

Default Too Many Categories

My husband set-up Money and has been using it for 2 years. He set-up way too
many categories and sub-categories. He set-up categories for every little
thing instead of being more general. Can I just start-over with new
categories? I am trying to determine what we spend where and as of right now
there are too many categories to figure that out. TIA.
