Delivering ads and links to things like "great car loan rates" and keeping
you from seeing the ads on all of the other FI websites you might visit
instead.

And be sure you're not using Money Essentials. ME is inadequate for anyone
who actually wants to use computerized accounting. I've yet to figure out
what it *is* good for.

Steve, thanks for the suggestions. I have some more questions for you or
anyone else. I am using Money Plus Deluxe. I attempted method 2, however
when I enter a transaction in my checking account it does not allow me to
specify a category, just the date, check number, payee and amount. Is there
some other way to add a category? At what point to I mark that transation
"Cleared" since it will technically never be on my bank statement? Where do
I account for the income? Do I add another transaction for the income since
I cannot edit the money amount on the transactions which were downloaded from
my bank? Again at what point would that be posted?

Thanks again.

Here are two ways:

1 - Create a cash account named "Pocket Money". Add a transfer
transaction to your checking account that moves the cash from
"Checking" to "Pocket Money". Enter transactions in "Pocket Money" as
you spend your cash. Balance "Pocket Money" each month, entering an
adjustment to make up for all the things you forgot to enter.

2 - Create a transaction in "Checking" with the payee "Cash". Make the
category "Foodining Out", or whatever most of the money goes to. As
you spend your cash, edit splits in the transaction to show where it
went. For example, if you withdrew $100, it starts out with $100 to
Dining Out. Then you buy $40 of gas, so add a new split for
"Auto:Gasoline" of $40, and change the old $100 Dining Out to $60.

I like #2 because it's simple. Other people like #1 because there's more
accountability. Other people might chime in with other methods. Pick
whatever you like best -- it's your accounting system, and you only have
to make your accountant happy.

Default Account for cash back

I typically deposit my salary check into my checking account and get cash
back for my groceries for the month. I have Money automatically update my
checking account register. How do I account for the cash back, both with
regards to the expense and the income?
