| Thee are some statements in this that make no sense like My - quote - > > file has been removed from my hard drive and placed in part unknown.
If your file has been removed from the Hard Drive what have you been usingand what are you trying to open? You stated that you need to sign into a live ID to create an account? Is this when you are creating a new file? Basically it comes down to this if your file crashed and you have no backups other than older .mbf files from prior to vista you will need to use one of these. The file repair on the file will not change the fact that due to the crash a password is now required. The reason someone may have told you that you will need to pay to recover your money file is because there are some THIRD Party companies which may be able to do so. And the charge would be from them not Microsoft. | Hummm.... Now I have to PAY to get my files back, I am told. Here is my similar problem: I can't create a new account unless I sign into Live ID. Live ID does not recognize either my internet connection nor my username and password. My file has been removed from my hard drive and placed in part unknown. If I want it back, I must PAY for support. Something doesn't seem right here and there doesn't seem to be anyone that can help. | You failed to mention which version of Vista you are using, but if your installation is either the Business or Ultimate edition, Volume Shadow Copy Service may very well have made many copies of your Money file. I have 14 copies on Ultimate, dating back nearly a year. They are accessible by right-clicking on the Money file and selecting "Restore previous versions". For anyone upgrading to Vista, consider that this is but one of many features that in my mind justify the expense of the higher-end editions. Note to Dick and MVPs: Although this Vista feature does not apply specifically to Money, for those users who desperately need an emergency backup and have one of these Vista editions, it may be worth noting in the respective FAQs. Make sure your search is complete. One way would be do this command in a command window: dir \*.mbf /s If you right-click a command prompt shortcut and choose run as administrator to start that command window, you could be a tad more sure. You should be scared. What if your hard drive failed? You should review your backup procedures-- not just for Money. In M+: Tools-> Settings-> BackupSettings I suggest checking x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money Save in [a place on your hard drive ] It is best to Browse to a location rather than typing the path. x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] x Perform scheduled backups every _28_ days Save in [a USB flash drive location] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] Then periodically, perhaps each month or three, copy your latest backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. Copy your browser favorites/links and your email addresses, at least, also. You could keep a copy in a safe deposit box, or strongly encrypt the data and save a copy off-site. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive rather than floppies. They are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof). * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup files. You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone. - quote - > Talk soon > Chris > "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: > > In microsoft.public.money, Christopher Patrick <Christopher > > Patrick[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > > > > > I know I have seen several users with a similar issue, but slight variances. > > > I have used MS Money since 1998. | Sorry...I did find the Salv tool (I was doing repair from inside money, opened with a new file). It always asks for a password. Any other suggestions would be great. I've always been a fan of Money, but this issue, with the backups no longer working is starting to sway me from Money...very scary to lose so much data suddenly. ![]() Talk soon Chris "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, Christopher Patrick <Christopher > Patrick[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > > I know I have seen several users with a similar issue, but slight variances. > > I have used MS Money since 1998. | Hi there- Where is salve.exe located? I did try the repair feature, but it again asks for a password to the file. Unfortunately, Money has not backed up since the move to Vista. I've searched, and the only backups are pre Vista. | Hi all- I know I have seen several users with a similar issue, but slight variances. I have used MS Money since 1998. I recently upgraded to Vista, and MS Money 2007 (last few months), and all was well. Last night, MS Money suddenly crashed. I have always used a Windows Live ID / password to access my account. When I attempted to start Money again, my Live ID and Password would not work. I closed the program, restarted it, and now suddenly it asks for a password for the file. Since I've always used Live ID, I never set a password for the file. In any case, when going to restore my file from my backup, I noticed that when switching to Vista, the location of the backups that I used to use (In C:\Document and Settings\username) no longer exists as a folder, so Money has not been making backups either, un beknownst to myself. I've seen posts about people on previous versions of Money that upgraded to fix this, but I am on the most recent version, had a Windows Live ID, which I can no longer use to access my file, and can't find and backups since the upgrade to Vista. Does anyone know anything else I can try? I am a little panicky since my entire financial history since college is within this file, and I thought I was doing everything right. Thank you for any help. Talk soon Chris |
