Assigning categories is less important than being creative with your
Reports. You can put 2 tax categories as subcategories for 2 different
categories. Using Reports, though, you can limit a report to the 2
subcategories and get a total of your tax spending.

Category Groups are of very limited utility, so I wouldn't sweat it. What
you suggest re. mixing category groups at the subcategory level will work
just fine. Many of us would put Property Taxes in a Taxes category and
Homeowners Insurance in an Insurance category, however. That doesn't make it
right and your way wrong, however.

Default Category Groups

MS Money 2008 Plus Premium

I'm in the process of creating many categories and sub-categories for
all of my income and expenses and I'm trying to decide which "Category
Group" to associate with each of these categories and sub-categories.

What consequences are there if I associate a category and it's sub-
category with two different category groups?

Example:

Category - Housing
Sub-Category - Property Taxes
Sub-Category - Home Insurance

It seems logical to me to assign the "Real Estate Taxes" category
group to the "Property Taxes" sub-category, as well as the "Home/Rent
Insurance" category group to the "Home Insurance" sub-category.

What category group do I assign to the "Housing" category?

What implications are there if I chose a different category group for
a category and it's sub-category? Will the sub-category's data be
included in the category's category group?

(could they have made this more confusing?) 'sigh'
