Cindy's suggestion is the most rigorous, and your CPA will like it.

Here's my approach:
I make a cash withdrawal, say $100. I categorize it as Foodining Out
since most of the money will go to lunches.
If I spend some of the cash on another category, say $10 for gasoline, I
go back and edit the withdrawal transaction, adding a split for the gas
purchase and changing the dining out entry to $90.
When I make another withdrawal, I start the process over.

The advantage of my method is that I don't have another account to
balance. The advantage of Cindy's method is that it's more trackable,
and your cash account shows up on your balance sheet\.

Are we talking MSN Money (some web site thing) or Money the application? If
the latter, in addition to Cindy's answer, see

You can create a Cash account. When you get money out of your checking just
do a transfer to the Cash account. then you can record transaction in the
Cash account to have a record.

Default Petty Cash

How do I record petty cash?

For example - I pay off my grocieries by giving shoprite cash and not a
credit card. Where can I relfect this in Money so it shows up as an expense
for me. Where can I post it? Currently I have several accounts linked up
like checking, savings, credit cards.

Another example - What if I want to pay my gas for my car using cash. How
can I record this on MSN money so it will use the category "automobile" to
track this?

I think the only way it for example to open my checking account register and
force an entry on it, even though I did not use the checking account to pay
for the items.

Does anybody have any suggestions.
