Microsoft money deluxe plus did the trick. It allowed me to open both files
and I am very, very happy. Thanks for your help and I hope this helps others
out there with the same problem

On http://www.microsoft.com/money/Produ...s.aspx?pid=002 and
http://www.microsoft.com/money/Produ...ve_tab=Compare
note at the bottom where it says "* Important note – Microsoft Money
Essentials will not be able to open previous Money (Money Deluxe,
Money Premium, or Money Home & Business) or Quicken files. If you
are upgrading from a previous version of Money or Quicken, Money
Plus Deluxe may be the right solution for you."

Even beyond that, there are more differences too.

So if I install this trial, it will tell me the versions of the files I have
on external drive? I intalled the 2008 money essentials and it said it would
not open older versions of money files. It didn't tell me what version I had
been using. How will plus deluxe be different

You can install the Money Plus Deluxe trial and see which backup
file extension is used to save your existing file.

Is there a way I can check my backup files on my external drive to see if
they were backed up on a 2001 version?

Here's my best guess at some dire assistance which may or may not be your
problem but is for a surprising number of people who get here with this
complaint under these circumstances:

See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=105.

Default Microsoft Money Password help

I worked with money 2001on my old computer xp . I had no password for one
file and I did have a clear password for my other file. I had to reformat
and I installed 2001 money on a new laptop with vista. Trying to download my
files, it asks for a password. for the file that didn't have a password, it
asks for the password. For the file that had a password, the official
password didn't work. I ran a password retrieval program and it verified
that the file without a password didn't have one assigned.
