As it turns out, I exited Money without responding to the invitation
and lo and behold, when I opened it up again I was not urged to join.

I think that thanks to all of you we brought this one to a successful
conclusion.

re-read...

Put your existing *.mny file into your Documents folder. (Also make
an additional copy on different media such as a USB flash drive
while you are thinking of it.)

Open Money by double-clicking that existing *.mny file in Windows
Explorer.

If it asks for a LiveId, are you sure you did not have a LiveID on
the previous existing file?

Assuming you bought Money Plus (per the Subject) and you want to
start a new file, when you get the initial screen click Next. Then
select "I don't want to use a password." Then click Next.

If you bought an earlier version and you want to start a new file,
select Decline when it asks.

Which I did, installed, entered the product key, updated, loaded the
current file from the downloaded (unregistered) program: all fine and
good. But...

MS now asks me to register myself into LiveID. Which I do not want to
do. For which it gives me no alternative.

Grateful for any suggestions.

If that is the name that you used for (or was assigned to) your *.mny file,
then that is correct. When I ugrade my version of Money I've been using the
data (*.mny) file created by the previous version, so I don't know what the
default *.my name is for Plus. It used to be MyMoney.mny

When you open the file, what does Money say across the top of its window?
That filename, with extension .MNY, should be what you open. If you just
install the store-bought copy on a working system, it should be smart enough
to know what the last Money file was that you used and just open it again.

I'll pick up a boxed one tomorrow. For my peace of mind, Bob, is the
2008.mny file id the only file I need to open in order to continue as
before?

Thanks,

If he already bought Money, then he should go to findmyorder.com to
re-download and to get his key, and he will carefully preserve both
this time.

I had inferred he had yet to purchase Money, and so would be working
with the trial.

....MUCH BETTER. This way you have a copy of your setup files if you have to
reinstall Money (say after a reformat).

The activation code would have been provided only after you had
bought Money. It would not have come with the trial download.

Default Purchase Money Plus Deluxe

I downloaded the program, installed it, created a file with several
accounts, and downloaded my 2008 data in the file. I now want to
purchase it, but:

I understand from the manual that the activation code was contained in
an e-mail that came with the download; I no longer have that e-mail.

Shall I download and install another copy without losing my 2008 file?
Shall I buy a boxed copy and install it?

I have another 45-50 days of free use, but I'd like to buy before it
becomes a crisis.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
