| BOB So why we can post suggestion? Where will be the best place to be heard by microsoft to enhance their product? Don't want to be on your back, don't take it personal, but i feel i waste my time posting to those newgroups if those are not monitoring by Microsoft. For me is like telling that microsoft does not care about is't customer. "Bob Peel, MVP" wrote: - quote - > BTW Microsoft aren't here. | Two questions: 1) Does OFX allow transmittal of arbitrarily long Payee information? (I.e., at least way longer than Money's 32 (IIRC) character limit.) I know you are closer to these specs than I am. 2) If 1 is yes, then does the Payee Rules thing operate on the whole string before truncation or just the length after truncation? The reason I ask is that I have seen these kinds of data elements on bank web sites where they display a LOT of characters of their own useless fluff BEFORE actually getting around to anything meaningful to me. If the useful part gets truncated before you can use PRM, then there might not be enough information left in the data to use PRM to do any good. | I don't think people were being "dicks", not even me, Dick. 1) Bob apparently didn't understand where the "suggestion" stuff comes from. Chris wanted to make sure Bob understood that this suggestion stuff was being solicited/added by the MS newsgroup web exposure. 2) It's a great suggestion, and more power to you for making it. Just beware that user suggestions are not really being considered, from all we can tell, at this point in Money's lifecycle. 3) I'm not sure you and Chris were even communicating on the problem as you see it. If you are saying the information getting into Payee is being truncated to some shorter than desired length arbitrarily, well. there are limits on the width of this field in both Money and the data interchange standards. Remember at all times: the back office banking systems were NEVER designed as though this data would ever be used this way. If it were, it would be properly normalized and so forth at their end, this wouldn't be a problem. I read your problem to indicate that you, on their web site, see a data element **something like** my example here: CHECK CARD PURCHASE 20080105 MERCH654789 *POS WLMRT SC ENGLWD CO SC and when it gets into Money as the Payee it is getting truncated to **something like**: CHECK CARD PURCHASE 2008010 when what you really want for the Payee is **something like**: WalMart or something along those lines, thus throwing out the one key piece you need to tell what the heck the purchase was, thus, what category you should assign to the transaction. (As though knowing where a purchase was made--say WalMart--will ever hope to answer whether it was tires or groceries or a DVD player or a Rx or some of all of the above or ...) Is this correct? I do not download transaction data. Way too much pain dealing with crap like this. Way too little gain from getting it from the bank when the connection ad login and so forth is all working and then having to fix it all as opposed to just entering it all by hand in the first place. YMMV. FWIW, most people who come here looking for help with problems related to downloaded transactions data--i.e., most people who come here--disagree with me on this issue. They swear that downloaded data is essential to using Money. While this is not going to quite do what you want, this is how you> short field length for Payee/Category is a dealbreaker for me. The full text is available on my bank > website. will make this work best with what is available: Go to Banking-> AccountTools-> Categories&Payees-> Payees-> PreferredPayeeNames (better yet, click Shortcuts at the top and add Payees as a shortcut to make navigation like this shorter) which shows how downloaded names are translated into Payees. Record the Payee Name Variation(s) shown for CHECK CARD PURCHASE. Delete the entries that are not actual Payees. Then click on GoToPayeeRulesManager. Excluded Payee Names identifies words and phrases that should be ignored from the payee field (e.g., check, deposit). Add each word or phrase that was listed as a Payee Name Variation that you recorded. You should add CHECK CARD PURCHASE, AM, PM, as well as other similar things you noted in the PreferredPayeeNames. Then select Tools-> Settings-> OnlineServiceSettings-> ReplacePayeeNames.... You may want to set Tools-> Settings-> OnlineServices-> AddADescriptionToTheMemoField |
