No. You can look at the QIF files with a text editor such as> is that it returns an error message instantly, rather than hanging up for a > few minutes. > I've gone through all procedures that were suggested, but no success. > I have seen no problems like mine in all my searches across the Net, so I > assume it is uniquely mine, not typical to 2003 upgraders. > I've tried something new, and will start a new thread, but I will ask you, > too: > I've begun exporting the various 2003 accounts in QIF, and importing them > into 2008. However, about half the items don't show the dates. Any idea why? Notepad. The records are normally chronological. If you want to do the QIF export/import, I would follow the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;178830 except in the first step 4, I would suggest this: start the name of the QIF file for the investment accounts with an underscore (_), and start the name of QIF files for the cash accounts associated with the investments with a letter. Thus you might have _BrownInvestment.qif and BrownInvestmentCash.qif. This would cause the investment account to be processed prior to the associated cash account. When the BrownInvestment got created, you would specify that you want to track the cash transactions. Then specify that the cash transactions account for BrownInvestment was where the BrownInvestmentCash.qif transactions get sent. Then File-> Import ALL AT ONCE using Ctrl+<click> to select files. Specify "New or Recovered" account when asked. Of course you will use a different filename for the new file, and you will have both versions to choose from when done. I would also set up the backups to make sure they are using different names. If you choose to do the QIF export, several things will not come across, but you would have a very clean file. - quote - > "Cal Learner-- MVP" <via_newsgroup[at]please.tnx> schrieb im Newsbeitrag > news:uu52o3dvq30849mqe6g1uhd5op0b1mmtl0[at]4ax.com... > > In microsoft.public.money, Hubertus Bigend wrote: > > > > Thanks for staying on this with me. > > > > > Taking the basic file and running a Level 1 repair on it worked. | No success. I've tried every conceivable variation of that, and all that I've achieved is that it returns an error message instantly, rather than hanging up for a few minutes. I've gone through all procedures that were suggested, but no success. I have seen no problems like mine in all my searches across the Net, so I assume it is uniquely mine, not typical to 2003 upgraders. | Thanks for staying on this with me. Taking the basic file and running a Level 1 repair on it worked. It put out a repaired file that I gave a new name. Yeah, I tried both of course. Then I put the new corrected file that resulted from the initial repair, and tried to put that through Level 2. It won't do it. I've also attempted to take the basic file, and just run a Level 2 repair on it. That didn't work either. | I can select the file, and do a Level 1 Repair. I save the selected file to a new name. Then I select the file that I repaired using Level 1 (Quick Repair) and choose to do a Level 2 Repair (standard) after which I immediately get the following error message: "The utility could not repair your file. Repair a different version of your file, restore a back-up file, or re-install Money. You should also make sure your file is not saved as read-only.(0x800a144e)" None of them are Read-Only. I've also tried to restore my 2003 Back-Up file into 2008, but that didn't work. I just installed Money 2008, so I don't think that's the problem either. | An interesting development! I've now TWICE left the software run uninterupted while it was unresponsive during the Conversion process. After two hours (or something like that) of being left alone, I would get this final error message: "A communication error occured. Please try your call again. If you continue to have problems call your financial institution's Online Services Customer Support." I don't know why in the middle of conversion from a 2003 file to the neweest format it would try to connect to an outside data source. Is this an odd unrelated error message? Anyone? | I have to admit this is growing beyond my skillset. I am a photographer, so converting it to different database formats may be harder than just accepting Quicken as the new home. I casually tried the same thing in 2006 and 2007, but each time figured "oh, it's not working, but it's not important right now... If I needed to I could probably figure it out." Now it's 2008 and I've decided that I need to get off 2003... and it's not working. Anyone else? Anyone ever encounter this issue and subsequently found a noob-compatible solution? |

It does, but in a different form -- salv.exe in the install folder.> 2008, so that seems to be a no-go. The Money Plus File-> RepairMoneyFile-> StandardFileRepair level 2 can make a repaired version of a Money 2003 file also, and that would be newer. |

This is usually an oversight (commonly known as a "mistake") by the original programmers of the database. It only occurs when you hold your mouth right, so most people never see it. You apparantly have an advanced degree in mouth-holding .When another utility, like a version converter, reads the database file, assuming every transaction followed the format rules strictly, it can hang on the bad transaction. This problem is actually one lazy programmer following another. The first didn't verify the database entry, and the second didn't bother to either compensate for a known problem or give you an explanatory error message. I seem to recall a major Money database format change around 2004. I think they converted from Jet to Access. Everyone complained that the file size ballooned and performance nosedived. On the other hand, you could use Access to get your Money data (I seem to recall). You might try converting to a slightly newer version of Money, then converting that to 2008. -- Steve B. | Hmmm.... I only have the newest version of Quicken 08, my new version of Money says it doesn't support it. I need to open it in Q 06 or older... I don't have one, and I don't even know if Quicken files are backwords compatible. There's got to be another solution though. | Good advice on the Throwaway Files, I've definitely been doing that. Money 2003 doesn't have the File Repair Tools, and my file won't open in 2008, so that seems to be a no-go. The files definitely converted successfully to Quicken 08, so maybe reimporting them into Money might work... strikes me as an odd way to go, though. I will try it anyway. What constitutes a Corrupt Transaction? You have several ways to solve the problem. 0) Back up your file. Do all your experimenting with a throw-away copy of your data. 1) Run the first- and second-level file repair tools. Sometimes this fixes the problem. Do them separately. 2) Find the bad transaction. Delete one account, then try to convert. If it works, you found the right account. Now start over and delete half the transactions in that account. Try to convert. If it works, you narrowed down your search. Start over again and delete half of what you deleted before. Try to convert. Repeat until you get it down to one bad transaction. Delete that transaction and re-enter it. Heaven help you if you have more than one bad transaction. 3) Export each account to a QIF file, then re-import them into a new Money database. This has the advantage that you will have a nice, shiny, squeaky-clean database when you're done. Money will run like new. See other threads for the procedure. 4) Import your data into Quicken, then import that into Money. This depends on which version of Quicken you bought. Each version of Money only works with last years' version of Quicken, because Money comes out first each year. You'll have to set up all your automated and personalized stuff again. These things are long shots: Clean up your system in general by deleting temporary files and purging internet browser caches. Run a CHKDSK on your hard drive and check your RAM for problems. | Hi everyone. We have been using Money 2003 Deluxe (V. 11) for several years, and have been with Money even prior to that. After several notifications that our version is no longer being supported, we have decided to move to the newest version, Money 2008 Plus Deluxe. Both are the US versions of the software. The 2003 has been running on a number of XP systems, and one Vista PC. As context, we consider ourselves relatively advanced users. We're relatively competent with PCs, as well accounting software. We move data around all the time, and know how to back it up. We have a large family, so our data file has grown to include over 30 active and inactive Bank Accounts (some in $ and others €), 20 Credit Card Accounts, around 10 Investment Accounts, 5 Loan Accounts, and 8 Asset Accounts. We also use it to track Frequent Flyer Points from 7 different sources, and have a Home Inventory List with over 100 entries... all this not to somehow impress anyone, but rather to give some background on the size and complexity of the file (35 MB) ... also, my wife is a CPA, so what can I say... we keep pretty tight records :-) Supposedly the Upgrade/Conversion path is simple and automated. Find the old file, Open it, and it should go through it's own conversion process. In order to test everything, I copied and renamed our primary and back-up files. I open the file in 2008, it prompts me for my Live log-in (successfully) and then there's a quick back-up prompt that I've configured to allow. Next I get back to a Sign-In screen to grant me access to my existing 2003 file, and again I sign in via Live ID - no problem there either. The it says Opening Money file, followed by a Progress Bar called Converting file... working.... But nothing happens. I've let it run for as long as an hour, without success. Occasionally Vista will ask if it should shut it down or wait for a response from the application, and I will tell it to keep on waiting. So now what? I've gone back into 2003 and created a file without passwords to online accounts. That doesn't seem to have made a difference either. There must be a solution! We've been at this for several weeks now, and have gone so far as to buy Quicken (eek!) - no problem converting to Quicken, but I can't get into Money. It's frustrating, because it's an app that is really important to us, and with which we have a lot of familiarity. Can anyone here help? What am I missing? What do I need to check? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help that might be offered, Hube |
