| In case someone else is reading this thread, here is the solution that finally worked for me. Thanks Mark. "Try temporarily elevating this Standard account to an Administrator acccount. Start Money and Activate Close and restart Money to ensure that it doesn't ask you to activate it again. Demote this user to a Standard user again Try Money. -Mark" "mansart" wrote: - quote - > Has anyone figured out a resolution to this problem yet? I have the exact > same experience. | Has anyone figured out a resolution to this problem yet? I have the exact same experience. If I open Money Plus under the administrator account (or with Run as Administrator) it works fine, but if I open it in a standard account it says the program has not been activated. It worked find in the standard account during the entire trial period before I purchased and tried to activate it. I just spent three hours (literally) talking to tech support. After two and a half hours of trying to get it to work the guy finally told me "oh, it's not supposed to be run in a standard account, it's only designed to run in an administrator account." Because that made no sense on so many levels (not the least of which was the fact that he had just spent two and a half hours trying to get it to work in a standard account without every mentioning that it wasn't meant to be used that way) I asked to speak to a supervisor. The "supervisor" just said the same thing as the tech, but neither sounded like they knew what they were talking about so I came here to check it out. From what I've read, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, most people are able to use Money Plus in a standard account on Windows Vista, while some of us are not. Has anyone who had this problem figured out how to resolve it so that they don't have to use an administrator password to run the program? My data file is in \users\<accountname> \documents\money\microsoft money.> X:\users\<accountname> \documents\...? Or in something like "My > Documents"? I think the latter is actually a link that emulates the > old "documents and settings" structure for older programs. If recorded > as stored there, it may still cause problems. It has always been in that location, except that when I ran Windows XP, it was "Documents and Settings" and "My Documents" instead of "Users" and "Documents". I did a clean install of Vista a long time back and have since been running Money 2006 without problems, so the current Money should definitely be using the Vista path and not the semi-hidden XP shortcut. Also, when I first encountered trouble with the current version of Money, I removed it, manually removed all trace of Money from the registry and then carefully re-installed it. That re-inforced that I had done everything by the book for the installation and also ensured that the only thing left over from the previous version of Money was the data file -- except I have just realized that I did not remove all trace of the previous version of Money from the hidden folders in my profile (in locations like AppData and Program Data), but on review now, there does not seem to be anything relevant there. regards, Alan. |

Or do you conclude that the activation is stored somewhere not accessible to standard users, because of your observations? Where is your data file? Is it in X:\users\<accountname> \documents\...? Or in something like "My Documents"? I think the latter is actually a link that emulates the old "documents and settings" structure for older programs. If recorded as stored there, it may still cause problems. -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL |

| Hi! The message is, "You must activate Money within 60 days of... Would you like to activate now?" I receive this error message when I start Money as a standard user. I do not receive it if I start Money as an administrator. regards, Alan. Cal Learner-- MVP wrote: - quote - > Support would be the place. | Hi! Thanks for confirming my suspicion that Money should run fine under a standard user account. Thanks too for providing suggestions on what might be wrong but, with the exception of the SSL setting (which I have subsequently changed), I had already done those things. There is something a bit different with my configuration. The product is activated, but the activation information is stored somewhere where a standard user on my machine is not able to access it. I will get back to support and see if they can come up with something. If someone could just tell me where the activation information is stored, I am quite confident that I could resolve it. regards, Alan. |

Be sure that your Money and backup files are moved to a spot that> My installation will not recognize that activation has taken place when > I run it as a standard user. If they are in ProgramFiles, Vista will create an impermanent copy of the file for the user to use, unless the user explicitly right-clicks at launch and choose RunAsAdministrator that time. Check that the SSL2 protocol is enabled. That checkbox is in IE Tools-> InternetOptions-> Advanced. Install Money from the Money Plus by browsing to the setup file. Right-click that file, and choose RunAsAdministrator. After install, right-click the Money icon and choose RunAsAdministrator to let potential updates happen. Reboot the computer. You should not have to run as Administrator normally. |

Many people do what you ask. It sounds to me like your data file is> Vista? > My installation will not recognize that activation has taken place > when I run it as a standard user. Having to run a financial > program, with a connection to the Internet, with elevated privileges > seems to totally undermine the point of UAC on Vista. not in your documents directory. You have to run Money at least once as administrator to register it, and run update during that session to get any program updates. If it downloads a program update you may need to run as admin on the first instance after the download to be sure the install completes. It sounds to me like your data file is not in your documents directory. It can't be in a program directory or subdirectory. Those locations don't allow file update by non-admin users. -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL |

| Hi! Is anyone able to run this version of Money as a standard user on Vista? My installation will not recognize that activation has taken place when I run it as a standard user. It does recognized the activation when I run it as an administrator (it was activated as an administrator). I reported this to Microsoft support and they implied that this was normal. That seems very unlikely to me. Having to run a financial program, with a connection to the Internet, with elevated privileges seems to totally undermine the point of UAC on Vista. regards, Alan. |
