Default Re: MS Money 2004: Error 1706 - 'No valid source ... '

Hello and thank you for the clarification on my thread.

I've solved my issue! I was having problems, now, when exiting MS Money
2004. I would get an error message when I opted to back-up which read:
'Unable to access the specified drive. Retry?' If I opted to retry, I
received the same message. Ultimately, I simply checked my 'Options' and
unchecked one of the boxes in there (automatic update every 14 days - which
had my E drive as the drive to use for that), and things seem to save and
close just fine.

Thanks for all of your help, time, and patience. Here's to a Happy 2008.

Be advised that there is a problem that would affect you if you have
a Passport on the file. So if that is the case, you will need to
wait for that to be resolved first, I expect.

That should not prevent you from opening Sample.mny. That is often a
useful test to distinguish problems with install vs problems with
the file.

Anyway, continuing the same thread would still get read. If you
still get that same 1706 error, it would be good to continue if you
have new info.

Default Re: MS Money 2004: Error 1706 - 'No valid source ... '

Hello,

Unfortunately, I have not had time to sit and get the MS Money issues
resolved w/out interruption until today.

I have done the following:

Deleted AVAST
Uninstalled MS Money
Rebooted machine
Reinstalled MS Money
Maneuvered to my most recent back-up file
Opened MS Money
Updated from bank
Tried to exit MS Money w/a SAVE at the end, but received an error message
that read: "Unable to access the specified drive. Retry?"

I chose 'options' and it appears as though it is going to the right spot (my
previous back-up location). Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong?

As always - Thank You for your assistance.

If you mean renaming the backup file upon exit, then that would be a
good way to get multiple backups. It is not going to help in the
case of hard drive failure, so you will want to also make a copy to
other media periodically.

In Tools-> Options-> Backup
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to
backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big
floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see
Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx

* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money071211.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.

Money 2006 and later add automatic multiple backups with the date
stamp as part of the backup file name.

Question regarding reinstalling Money/saving file somewhere else: if I do a
weekly backup by renaming the file as I exit Money (ie: 11 26 07), would that
be the same as saving it somewhere else?

I haven't taken care of my issue, yet, its just finals week. :O

Bob,

I am curious why you suggested uninstalling Avast? I recently installed
Avast and so far have not had a problem with MS Money Plus.

MDA (actually NDA) is a non-disclosure agreement. By signing that, MS give
MVPs early information about product plans and releases, and no we don't
know anything about future plans for Money!

If with Money loaded, you click on the File menu it will show you that last
..mny files you opened.

Money will always open the last .mny file that you used by default. However
if you navigate to a particular .mny file using My Computer or Windows
Explorer and double click on the .mny file it will open that file and
remember to use that in the future.

While this is likely all very valid, my point was to acknowledge the time,
patience, and effort that the MVPs volunteer for MS. (I'm not sure what an

MVPs are cultivated by Microsoft. They recognize free labor when they

BTW what operating system are you running as there are slightly different
rules under Vista?

I forgot to respond to the inquiry regarding what operating system I am
using. I am running Win XP 2nd edition.

I will do that, thank you. I'm afraid I have one other question. Which .mny
file do I copy elsewhere? The reason I ask is that my Money file looks
something like this:

c:Program Files/Microsoft Money/ ...
... then I have these folders: Calcs; Media; Money for Pocket PC; System;
Works
... then I have my renamed backups (ie: 11 09 2007, etc)
... then I have a: My MONEY; My Money Backup; My Money Backup 0; My Money
Backup 1
.... then a 'Readme' and a 'Sample' (included for thouroughness, only)

You see, I had a Money problem a few years ago & I created those additional
files during the 'fix' of that issue. Now, I'm not actually sure what's
important.

Any ideas?

Thanks, again,
Dianne

To be absolutely safe I would reinstall Money; so Uninstall Avast, uninstall
Money (first copy your .mny file somewhere safe - just in case!); reboot
your PC; reinstall Money and try opening Money.

BTW what operating system are you running as there are slightly different
rules under Vista?

I have not tried that, yet. I will give it a shot; I'm assuming that you
mean to uninstall Avast then re-try opening MS Money?

Thank you very much for your help. I wonder if MS realizes how much help
you folks are for their company?

Default MS Money 2004: Error 1706 - 'No valid source ... '

Hello,

It seems that I have a multitude of problems - of course, I'm right in the
thick of things, now, so, things are supposed to look darkest, right? ;-)

My problem seems to have begun after I installed Windows Defender, but, I
also installed Avast Virus Protection in the same timeframe, so, I can't be
sure.

I cannot open MS Money 2004. When I attempt to do so, I receive a MS Pop-up
that says the Windows Installer is configuring MS Money 2004 .... then, I
receive another pop-up that reads: Error 1706: No valid source could be
found for product Microsoft Money 2004. The Windows installer cannot
contiue.' Then, another pop-up appears on top of that one that reads: The
feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or, enter alternate path to a folder containing the
installation package 'MONEY.MSI' in the box below.

I click OK, then, the entire process starts again. I can't get out of the
vortex unless I use the 3-finger salute (Ctrl-Alt-Del).

SO. I tried browsing to find this MONEY.MSI file and I have no idea where
that may be.

THEN, I tried just doing a blasted System Restore, going back to about 3
weeks before any of the additions were made (Windows Defender & Avast), but,
I received a message stating that 'Your computer cannot be restored to:
Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007; System Checkpoint.'

What do I do, now?

Looking forward to whatever assistance you may be able to provide to this
lost traveller! This definitely falls under the First of Murphy's Laws,
timing-wise.
