| I do. I compare and/or enter transactions from transaction confirms for shares and total amount. I mark transactions Cleared (Ctrl+M). (For non-401k accounts): I compare share holdings from account statements to either Account Summary share holdings or, sometimes, to Portfolio Standard View as of date of statement views. I cross-check the share balances and put a check mark on the statements. Once all is well (and anything like distributions and interest off the statement that I hadn't noticed earlier are entered) I mark all transactions to that point in the Investment Account as Reconciled (Ctrl+Shift+M). (For non-retirement accounts): I balance the Investment Cash Accounts to statements. (For 401k accounts): I use the Account Summary Quick Update to get all to good numbers and then mark all activity in cash/investment accounts to that point as Reconciled. I treat the 401ks differently since: a) the volume of transactions is just overwhelming and generally useless in individual transactions (though I do try and enter those for market valued investments), b) the Investments are not always market valued and managing by share price and daily values is hard to impossible for these cases, and c) the 401k Manager that insists on balancing 401k accounts has been broken and/or just really odd for so long as to be a running joke amongst long time users. For the record and those who don't already know, I do not download transaction data, OFX or otherwise. | With regard to balancing an investment account (common stock, non-retirement) against the monthly statement, I see the option on the cash account side to do so much akin to balancing out regular bank accounts. However, the investment transaction side does not have this option and after the transactions on the cash side are reconciled, there is no change to the status of each investment transaction listing the buys and sells of common stock. Is there an easy way to mark as reconciled these transactions or do you have to pick through each line item separately? Do users even bother doing this? Thanks. John |
