I had another thought. If Money is already installed on your business
laptop you would probably need to uninstall Money before you try to install
it again on the portable drive. So make sure you have backups.

I just gave it a try with Money 2004 and a Lacie external disk.

I connected a Lacie external hard drive to a desktop computer where Money
wasn't currently installed and the installer installed Money without a
hitch. I then used my Money floppy disk backup to restore my account
details.

I don't know if you would find anything different by using a portable
harddrive though. I assume when you plug it into your laptop the portable
harddrive receives a new drive letter? If so you would need to setup
folders on the portable drive and direct the Money installer where to
install.

If it works and you are able to restore your account details successfully
to the portable drive you would then need to direct Money to the new
location for backups.

The data file should be easy. Setting up the application to be there will
probably be a lot harder as most installers won't install on removable
devices. Though Money's installer will let you specify where to install it,
I'm betting--but cannot confirm--that it will not let you install on a
removable device.

Default Using Money with an external harddrive

I would like to set up Money on a portable harddrive that will be the
location of both the Microsoft Money files and my personal Money data files
so that they are not kept on my business laptop.

I tried this once in the past but got very frustrated and wanted to give it
a try again.

Just wondering if anyone has mastered this?

Thanks in advance,

David
