Interesting. Maybe I should have said Vanguard says they don't support
pre-2005 Money downloads. From their website:

"You can download and export up to 18 months' worth of Vanguard® transaction
history into Money. After you download your data, your operating system
should automatically recognize the file and import it directly into your
Money records. The software will compare the new download with older
information to record only new transactions and eliminate any duplicates.
This service will work for Money 2005 or later."

I still use Money 2002 and receive direct downloads from Vanguard and my
bank just fine. The only direct download I have lost was my First USA
credit card after they became Chase last year, so I have to download
their web statements.

You can look on the http://www.microsoft.com/money/bankonline.aspx page.

If it says the data is available for the FI via:

"Direct Services are the fastest, easiest way to connect with your financial
institution and have your statements automatically downloaded into Money
directly from your financial institution."

Then you are getting data without going through Microsoft/Yodlee. But if it
breaks you might not understand all of this and might want to contact
Microsoft Support. This **does** cost Microsoft money and may be one of the
reasons the want to "stop loss" by setting a certain end date when they
break the functionality by definition.

OTOH, if it says:

"Direct Services* are the fastest, easiest way to connect with your
financial institution and have your statements automatically downloaded into
Money.

"* This service is provided by a third party provider, not your financial
institution. It is only available if you have Microsoft Money 2005 or later.
You will need to use Microsoft .NET Passport in order to access your account
information."

Then Microsoft and the "third party provider" (Yodlee at the present
writing) is in the loop.

If Dick Watson says "it depends," I'll go with his vastly superior knowledge
on the subject of Money.

I had a problem trading stock options through Vanguard via the internet one
time and was bumped up the chain of technical reps over several weeks. The
subject of Money and Quicken came up. The impression they left was clear,
connection to their system by Money and Quicken was a nuisance. If they
weren't dealing with software glitches, they were dealing with calls from
Money users with problems who didn't know whether to blame Vanguard or Money
for their difficulties.

It depends. Some are the one way and some are the other.

So I'm going into MS servers to get my data? It not like connecting
directly to the banks?

Vanguard, my fund family, will allow one to bypass Money's servers and
download and then import data directly to Money. As far as I can see my
credit card companies will not allow a direct download. One must go through
Money's or Quicken's servers. But even Vanguard doesn't support versions of
Money (or Quicken) pre-2005, so the need to update doesn't change. Given
the convenince provided here, the modest cost of updates seems reasonable to
me. I'd gladly pay more if they fixed a few bugs, but understand why they
can't.

So me connecting to my credit card company and getting updates costs
Microsoft money? When I contact my 401k provider, and update it costs
MS money?

You gotta bet kidding me.
