I was also having the same problem as above and was tearing my hair out - I
read the original post re the update but couldn't get the update to work.

I was logged in as administrator but it didn't work. I created another user
account and logged and back in and that didn't work - so thank thank you to
cal leaner for mentioning the right click- run as administrator as that
allowed me to run the program again and hey presto the update worked.

I again had to run as administrator to finish applying the update and then
found my back up copy and thank you thank you my file works. You are a
wonderful person cal learner

Check that the SSL2 protocol is enabled. That checkbox is in
IE Tools-> InternetOptions-> Advanced.

Install Money from the Money 2005 install disk by browsing to the
setup.exe file. Right-click that file, and choose
RunAsAdministrator.

After install, right-click the Money icon and choose
RunAsAdministrator to let updates happen. Do not have Money open an
existing file at this point. Instead have Money open Sample.mny
from the install folder, or have it create a new file without
Passport/LiveID (select Decline during the process. Don't bother
entering data-- click to start using Money before answering
questions. Then reboot the computer. Check that the Money 2005
version is 14.0.*.1105. Only then open your existing Money 2005
file that is in your Documents folder. You should not have to run
as Administrator for that.

to lose it or start again. Got any other ideas?

Put your file in a location where you have full rights, such as a folder
under "Documents". Vista protects files in the Program Files tree.

I am also having problems with this version. I am trying to transfer the
file to a new computer which is running vista. The old computer runs XP. I
have tried transferring the file and restoring backups. Neither work.

The message is that it can't locate or open the file, possible because it is
read-only file or I do not have permission to change it or my disk drive is
write protected. None of these appears to be true.

Any one got any suggestions?

Where is CDA? That would be a good starting point if that is where
the original file is from.

Tough to say--the localization incompatibility would still be an issue if it
is an issue.

Sadly, there still is no easy way--fifteen years and about as many versions
later--to tell what localization of Money actually wrote a file.

when i restore .mbf files i get the "incompatible version" error. Wondering
about the localized version, i took a closer look at my 05, the language
although english, is kind of european in nature and my currency is in
australian dollars. my M05 software was bundled with MS works on a disk
called "software jukebox".
regarding the backups, some mention being a 2004 backup. what would happen
if i uninstall 05 and try to reinstall 04 to try to open those 04 backups?
thanks for your help

Have you tried opening any of the backup files (with extn as .mbf)?

Incompatible version is from the file coming from a differently localized
version. (Say M05 for UK wrote the file and M05 for US tries to open it.)

As to the password problem, once you have updated the M05 to .1105, I don't
have a clue.

it has not ALWAYS been M05. It was, however a working file up until a week
ago when i had to restore my computer. Yes the sample opens. Additionally, i
have multiple ".mny" files. I have tried them all and i get the password
problem i described or the "incompatible version" error

What's the history of the file? It was ALWAYS in M05?

Does the sample file open?

Default Unable to open/restore in MS2005

After reviewing previous posts re: this issue, I have updated my MSmoney to
ver 14.0.100.1105. Attempts to open a previous file result in a return to a
blank password screen with no error message. Any thoughts?
