involved. I uninstalled and as much as there is about Quicken I dislike,
I'll go back there. sorry to have bothered you guys.

Hmm. I look at Microsoft's site and see that there is Microsoft Money Plus
and Money Essentials. (How they tell the 2008 version of Money Essentials
from the 2007 version is a mystery to me.)

(For the record:
Microsoft® Money Essentials
Microsoft® Money Plus Deluxe
Microsoft® Money Plus Premium
Microsoft® Money Plus Home & Business
are the marketing names du jour.)

Anyway, so let's assume you are using the Deluxe or higher version. Are you
using the Essential register? (If so, you want to use Advanced Register.)
Are you trying to setup an account by first specifying the financial
institution?

Once upon a time Microsoft had this simple. And then they got too many
complaints that Money was "hard to use" so they added all of these goofy
editions and Essential|Advanced features and so on. Now it may be simple for
some people to use but it's a nightmare for us to help since there are so
many different pathes you already could have gone down.

I surmise you are playing with Money Essentials (MEss). I wouldn't. You
might want to try Money Deluxe. It has frivolous features like different
types of accounts.

I am using Money 2007 Deluxe. If I go to the Home page and select "Account
List" (top left), then select "Add a new account" from the list of "Common
tasks" (top left), I get a list of 5 different types of accounts to choose
from.

Sounds like one strike against Money to me (unless I decide to move to
Japan). Any idea about my other question? ie whether an account is
checking, savings, or whatever?

The width of the field displayed in the register is proportional to the
width of the applications window beyond some certain minimum width. If you
run maximized on, say, a 1,600 x 1,220 widescreen monitor, the fields will
be gargantuan. If you run in a window that's, say, 640 wide, the fields will
be narrower. Still wide enough to hold a really large number. Don't forget
that the same basic code is run in countries like Japan where houses cost in
the tens or hundreds of millions of Yen. And look at the field in the
transactions when you edit/enter. They have to accommodate the calculator
pulldown in the same width.

1. A checking and savings account are essentially similar. You can withdraw
or deposit money, and some savings accounts even allow you to write checks.
The only major differences are in the interest rates and the fees. They are
both considered to be banking accounts. When you create a new account you
are given a list of 5 account types to choose from including banking, credit
card, investment, and two others.
2. My checking account won't let me enter deposits or withdrawals greater
than 999,999,999,999.99. I find this very annoying as I have to routinely
split my transactions in 2 to enter them. Just kidding, though the amount
seems to be accurate. Consider it a hedge against inflation.

Default Dumb questions from a newbie

I just downloaded the trial version of Money and have two incredibly stupid
questions that I can't find answers for in the manuals.

1. When I set up an account it just asks the names of my bank and never
asks if it is checking or savings or whatever. How do I distinguish between
the two?

2. On the default register screen that comes up the columns for Payments,
Deposits, and balance are wide enough to accommodate checks in the amount of
$100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 (I counted them myself). Heck, I don't
write checks that big but two or three times a month! Seriously, what gives
with that layout?

Thanks... Bob
