Tough to say as from the description you've given us, it's tough to say what
happened. Was your backup good? Did you test it before reloading your
operating system? Was your backup current? Are your view settings correct?
You say you lost data from the whole year. What year? What about the rest of
your data? What kind of backup was it? Money backup? File copy? Are you sure
you used the right data file? What kind of an install did you do? A complete
reinstall from a blank formatted disk? You say you were using the 89 SE
operating system. And you upgraded that (I think you mean Win98SE) on the
same hardware to WinXP? Are you sure you didn't open an "archive" file?

Don't yet hear an MS goof here at all. M03 is obsolete, long since. Win98SE
is past obsolete. Few pieces of hardware that have ever had Win98SE on them
are remotely suitable to run WinXP. Protecting one's own data is always your
responsibility, not Microsoft's.
