| I just tried setting IE offline. No change. It seems something's out of whack with that Vista account. Not to worry, it's trivial to migrate over to the new account. I'm there now! | Thanks again, Cal. I had previously restored those IE settings to their defaults back in the original account when your new account trick worked, including that master reset. Still no workie. And something else that's strange: I can't even get to Internet Properties from IE's Tools/Internet Options menu. When I try, I get a dialog that says "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is strange, considering that this IS the Admin account. -I've been getting there via the Control Panel. Another thing that seems strange to me is that even if there were some zone security or IP stack weirdness going on, you'd think that if Money couldn't access the Internet it would switch to some "offline" mode, or at least timeout waiting for the connection. -I let it hang overnight to see if that would happen, but it didn't. It does a mere 18 Reads and 3 Writes, and that's all she wrote. "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, SanFran wrote: > > Cal, that did the trick! This seems to indicate a problem beyond IE. > (Besides, I usually run a browser that sounds like a kind of cheese...) Instead of switching users now, you would want to see if you might have missed an IE setting to reset: In IE7, start with Tools-> Options-> Security-> LocalIntranet-> DefaultLevel which may be sufficient. If not, click ResetAllZonesToDefaultLevels. Then on Tools-> Options-> Advanced-> RestoreDefaults. Then maybe Tools-> Options-> Privacy-> RestoreDefaults. If those don't do it, or if you want something quicker, it looks as if you could just go to Tools-> Options-> Advanced-> Reset... to reset all IE7 settings and to disable add-ons. - quote - > My plan now is to slowly migrate my personal files and settings to the new

| Cal, that did the trick! You are imperial and god-like! -That has to be one of the all-time greatest tricks. After creating the new account and switching over to it, Money came right up. I then switched back to my original account and reset the IE settings to their defaults, but no go. This seems to indicate a problem beyond IE. (Besides, I usually run a browser that sounds like a kind of cheese...) My plan now is to slowly migrate my personal files and settings to the new account to determine where the fault lies. What will probably happen is that everything will continue to work in the new account (or I'll get sick of doing dignostics) and I'll wind up deleting the original account and renaming the new one to the old, which is just fine with me. If I ever find the root cause, I'll update this thread. I would try creating a new Vista user with Administrator privilege. Switch to that user and try running as that user, at least for testing. The theory is that if the problem is an IE7 setting, you will get default settings for the new user. If you succeed this way, it would accomplish the download, and it would point toward the reason the other did not work. You can delete the new user later, and your regular IE settings will not have been changed. Also, I don't know if Vista has a safe mode to try. - quote - > This thread appears to be the same problem (though on XP), but no answer was > found: > http://www.microsoft.com/communities...0c8&sloc=en-us > (It's titled "Money Plus trial doesn't launch", dated 8/23/07.) > -Fran > "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: > [snip] > > I don't think "off" is an option. > > > > I'm running in an Admin account, but to be sure, I also tried "Run as > > > administrator" on both the Money links and on the actual executable (.EXE) > > > file; nothing. | Thanks, Cal. Yep, I did try that article on DEP, even though mine was already set to the default and even though Money (and its related executables) hangs, not crashes. (I tried "opt in" and adding the Money executables.) Turning DEP completely "off" is an option per this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352 , but it did me no good. I am not running a third-party firewall, nor am I running a third-party virus app. I installed (and tried to run) as Administrator. This thread appears to be the same problem (though on XP), but no answer was found: http://www.microsoft.com/communities...0c8&sloc=en-us (It's titled "Money Plus trial doesn't launch", dated 8/23/07.) -Fran "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: [snip] - quote - > I don't think "off" is an option. > > I'm running in an Admin account, but to be sure, I also tried "Run as > > administrator" on both the Money links and on the actual executable (.EXE) > > file; nothing. | A new bit of info: Money Plus gets far enough to create the Users\<User> \AppData\Local\Micrsoft\Money\Money\17.0 directory. For laffs, I deleted it and let Money Plus recreate it. It still hangs. | I've tried installing both the Deluxe Trial edition and the full Deluxe install version from the (purchase) download site. In all cases, Money doesn't crash (as might be expected with DEP), it hangs after performing 18 I/O reads and 3 I/O writes. No splash screen or anything. I've tried everything I could find in this discussion group, but no go. It's not related to a Money file because a) I'm not even getting nearly that far, b) I've tried opening the sample one anyway. I've turned on SSL 2.0 and TLS 1.0 off. I never touched DEP, but turned it completely off anyway, to no avail. I'm running in an Admin account, but to be sure, I also tried "Run as administrator" on both the Money links and on the actual executable (.EXE) file; nothing. I've de-installed and re-installed a dozen times. The same hang happens when I try to run the other Money executables, too. (Insight, for example.) I was previously running Money 2004, but de-installed it before updating to Plus. One thing that might be of interest; I read somewhere at the purchase site that the Money installer should be asking for my Digital Rights key, but it never did. It looks just like the Trial installer: a very plain gray dialog box, with the usual radio buttons to accept the EULA, and a button to change where the product would be installed. There are no errors during the install, or in the log. Halp! |
