Thanks, Cal - the program is now updated so the version #'s match, and I am
now able to open the file on the portable that I had earlier created on the
desktop.

Exactly what I was hoping for!

Not needed. Just open Money to a file, such as Sample.mny, a time or
two while the laptop is connected to the internet. Assuming there is
not some firewall blocking things, the update should just happen.

An alternative to Sample.mny would be to create a new temporary file
(name it Test perhaps) with File-> New-> NewFile. Select Decline
during setup, and look for the link that then comes to skip the
setup process (no need for names and account info) and start using
Money now. After you see .1105, you will be able to use your real
file.

Cal - thanks for that advice. Now I can see the version number on the
portable which is slightly different (v# 14.0.50.1105 on desktop and v#
14.0.50.724 on portable)

Should I be able to install the .1105 version (which came on a CD) overtop
the .724 that was pre-installed on the portable?

Open Money by double-clicking the sample.mny file in your install
folder. That may be in
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2005".
If using Vista, right-click the sample.mny icon and choose
RunAsAdministrator. Help-> About will show the version.

Close Money. Open Money again by
right-clicking its launch icon and choosing RunAsAdministrator. It
may do an update. Close Money. Reboot the computer. Then open
Money and check that Help-> About... says you then have version
14.0.*.1105.

Do not put your Money file inside Program Files.

Mr. Peel,

The version number on my desktop matches what you expected (14.0.50.1105 and
is an OEM version that came with purchased PC), but I can't see the version
number on the portable. The Money program won't give me access to the
screen that shows the version number unless there is a datafile open.

Check the version numbers on both the desktop and the laptop. They MUST be
the same and if I remember the version number ends in 14.0.xxx.1105.

Default opening money datafile on portable PC

I have MSMoney 2005 installed on both my main desktop PC and my portable
laptop. I copied a datafile that I set up on my desktop PC to the portable
PC. I have no problem accessing this datafile on the desktop PC, but can't
open it on the portable PC - which shows an error message that ". . . cannot
open it, possibly because it is a read-only file or you do not have
permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected."

Can someone give me some advice as to how to adjust the settings to allow me
to open a Microsoft Money file created on a different PC?

- Bob
