BTW be aware that Norton has a "thing" about Money and that sometimes the only way to get Money installed when Norton was on a PC, was to completely uninstall Norton; install Money and then re-install Norton! -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. For scanning and recovering bad sectors, it probably doesn't do much better than Scandisk, the one built into Windows. [bracing for firestorm from Norton fans] For what you're doing, Scandisk is fine. I seem to recall that Norton will search multiple times for bad sectors, where Scandisk makes one pass. You can use both tools if you want. I've supported my clients for years using just Scandisk with no problem. In the same dialog box where you found Scandisk, you can run Defrag. That tool will reorganize your hard drive so all the chucks of files are arranged sequentially on the disk, improving access speed and decreasing wear on the drive. Run it every month or two. Norton also has a defragmenter, and it probably IS better than the one in Windows. -- Steve B. New Life Home Improvement

I followed your instructions and scanned the hard drive. Quite a few sectors were found bad and recorved. Thanks! I noticed that the Norton Disk Doctor also does the diagnosing and repairing work. So, for these system works, should one use Norton's or the Windows' System Tools?

All of your help are greatly appreciated! went bad because a sector on your drive failed. 0) Do a backup. 1) Run Windows Explorer. <Windows> +E 2) Right-click on your hard drive, then choose "Properties". A dialog box opens. 3) Change to the "Tools" tab. 4) In the "Error-checking" section, click the "Check Now..." button. A dialog box opens. 5) Check the boxes "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", then click the "Start" button. 6) You'll most likely get a dialog box that says the scan can't be performed because files are open, then asks if it's OK to do the scan after rebooting. Click the "Yes" button. 7) The dialog box disappears. Reboot to start the scan. This process will find bad sectors on your hard drive and ATTEMPT to move the contents to good sectors. Note the word "ATTEMPT". That's why you need to start with a backup. If you can't back up your whole drive, back up all your critical files. -- Steve B. New Life Home Improvement |

Thanks for your good suggestions. I found out a backup file about one month old and restored it in my Money 2003. I had no problems to copy and/or backup the file. Therefore I updated all the new information from the previous backup date into the old file to make it same as my problem file. The two files looked identical but the problem file still cannot be backuped or copied. I discarded the problem file and made copies of new files with backups. What a relieve! All of your help are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion. But I could neither make any copies of my Money file nor make any backupfiles. Now I have only one updated My Money file in the hard drive and have no recent backup files anywhere. If any trouble happened with this updated My Money file, I may lose all my data. In this case, should I try to repair my only file? Or you have any other ideas?

Recently when I tried to make My Money Backup file, or simplay close the Money, a message showes: "Money cannot create a temporary file in 'C:\DOCUMEN~1\...\LOCALS~1\Temp\.'" When I tried to copy the only My Money file to other folders or a flash drive, another message said: "Cannot copy My Money: Cannot read from the source file or disk." Please let me know how to solve the problem. Thanks a lot.
