Password not accepted after restore

You might try loading the sample file, and installing any online updates to
the Money program. Then retry your own file. If your Money file was last
updated with a version of the program that had these online updates
installed, the original program will no longer work.

I suspect that the version you used before was newer than Money
2006.

I had Microsoft Money protected with a password. I needed to reformat my
computer so I moved the Money and Money backup files to an external HD. I
reformatted my computer and downloaded Money 2006 (I think it was the same
version as before, but I downloaded it for free without signing in to
anything, so I hope it was the right thing) I moved the Money files from the
external HD back to my computer. When I tried to restore the backup file, I
was asked to enter a password. I know the password is correct, but it is not
accepted by money. What can I do? Or how can I recover a password if the
program itself reset it or something?
