They will get Canadian banks, they just won't get other Canadian specific info (taxes, RRSP vs 401k, etc). If they use a US term such as IRA, they can parallel many of the functions. I expect this will be some problem for tax preparation in that the basis rules for Canada (average across all accounts) vary from US rules (basis within accounts with some more choices in some cases). I think that Money uses the Windows regional settings to determine some things that it does differently, including basis. I don't know what happens if you switch those settings back an forth. Canadian banks are included in the unified list, altho the Money interface of the banks themselves is often limited to the Web interface. Money 2007 does not have a "Canadian" mode as did some earlier versions of Microsoft Money. I expect Money 2007 should be able to convert the Money files Canadian versions since Money 2000, but of course I can't be sure. The current file format is a unified North American English version. I don't know what the situation is for Canadian French files. I expect Money Plus is the same in this regard, but I am not sure. If you want to buy Money Plus Deluxe (you could not use Essentials for your purpose), you would need a US address, which you have. The version sold in Canada is Money 2006. As far as I know it is the Canadian Microsoft people who make that determination. I would not expect Money 2006 to expire for Canadian users unless a later version was offered. I am not speaking for Microsoft, but I am trying to interpret. But that would parallel the case in the UK where they sell Money 2005 still. So I wish I had more clear info for you. It's somewhat cloudy for me too. |

I use MS Money because it does a better job with my banking situation than Quicken, that can access only CA or US banks, not both like I need. I’d like to upgrade my MS Money but need a version that works for me. I read the article at: http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/422.aspx , and while it almost answered all my questions… can you recommend the best version of MS Money that will handle my cross border situation, with a predilection towards Canadian finances? Quicken isn’t the answer for me and while MS Money can import CA bank info, is there a version of the software that isn’t entirely US specific, especially for CA Savings Bonds, Retirement Funds, etc?
