Once old data imported into new version no going back. SO always keep a separate copy of the old program's data. Step by step : You probably already have c:\prg files\money folder Create a c:\prg files\money2008 folder Now install m2008 into the 2008 folder. You'll end up with all default files. [ I like to rename money.mny to money_orignal.mny so that when Money opens it will not find the file that IT is looking for ( thereby leaving that file 'new') Up to you.] Now copy your 'old ' money file from M2004 folder (money.mny from c:\prg files\money folder) into 2008 folder twice and call it money_2004.mny ( an original of your 2004 file in case ever needed) and money_2008.mny ( your new file, so you'll be able to distinguish between the versions.) The tough part is done. Open Money 2008 program ( if you get error it's because it didn't find a default file - 'cuz you renamed it) and click "file - open " browse to c:\prg files\money2008 folder and select money_2008.mny It will import/upgrade that data to M2008 format. Close file Reopen and make sure it still uses that same file. All set to use. For Backups - make 2 different Folders ( M2004 and M2008) so you know what data to use. For updates on same day, sometimes M2006 would leave a process hanging for a while when it exited, so if I did m2006 first, sometimes when I tried to open M2004 - would get a 'process already running' error. I found using M2004 first - exiting and then open later version worked fine. ( M2004 closed quickly) |

If I install M04 on another machine and get it working, then no matter what I do on the production machine I am still able to do some things. Mike |

| As a plan C strategy I am thinking about the optimal means of upgrading from M04 to M08. The below is approach I am thinking about using. If anyone sees a problem or knows a better way, please tell me. Step 1: I want to keep a working copy of M04 until I am satisfied all is well with M08. Hence, I am going to install M04 on a test machine and copy my database over to that machine. Step 2: Make a back up of my current M04 databases. Step 3. Uninstall M04 on a production machine. Uninstall Pocket PC on same machine and on the ipaq 2215. Step 4. Install M08 on production machine. Copy the current M04 database to the Program File folder. Hopefully, M08 will be able to convert my existing database to the new version. Step 5. Install Money Ultralight (or whatever it is called) on the PC/ipaq. Step 6. Run autosync and hopefully the PC will correctly sync the ipaq. Step 7. Try to figure out why computers are making my life more difficult rather than helping to simplify it. Thanks. Mike |
