| Thanks. This was very informative. I have other issues with programs no longer working correctly after the re-install and this could explain a lot of it. So far all I knew was that all the problems go away if I turn off UAC. I really think Microsoft went way over-board with security in the home versions. No one buying a home version should be expected to be an expert in computer systems security to do simple things like this. I suppose it's just another case of the pendulum swinging to the opposite extreme of what it was for years with the lack of security in home versions of the OS. I'll have to wait for it to swing back the other way. | Hi ETruss, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_SID Even if you use the exact same user names to set up your user accounts, the SIDs won't match if you reinstall an NT-based OS over existing data, or if you restore data from NT Backup, Ghost, etc with the "Restore Security" option enabled. The same thing can happen if you delete a user account and recreate it with the same name. If you look at the permissions and ownership for any files that belonged to a particular user (as opposed to a user group like "Users", "Administrators", etc)(assuming Windows Explorer will let you, see next), you will see something like "S-1-5-12-7623811015-3361044348-030300820-1013" in place of the user name. This sort of problem was easier to see and fix with Windows NT, 2000, and XP Pro. XP Home forced a user to boot to Safe Mode to have access to permissions through Windows Explorer. I haven't worked with Vista enough to know if the "Home" versions of Vista suffered a similar dumbing down. To avoid this sort of problem, I've generally reinstalled NT-based OSes to a clean disk, and then restored the data from a separate disk (usually using NT Backup or Ghost) with the "Restore Security" option cleared, so that restored files took on the permissions and ownership of the folders created during the reinstallation. Any data stored under "User" or "Public", or any data stored under a user-created folder from the old install ("C:\Downloads", etc) is likely going to have the same problem your Money folder and files did. Assuming you have access to permissions and ownership through Windows Explorer with your version of Windows Vista, you should be able to rightclick any questionable folders and files and go to the Security tab to see if they are affected. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com "ETruss" <ETruss[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:2FA978D6-EBF1-44D9-8ADF-D1ABBDE0E8FC[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > This did not seem to help. | This did not seem to help. Thinking that this might be a permissions issue of some sort, I tried creating a new folder in the Users\Documents, copying all the files from the Money folder to the new folder, deleting the old Money folder and renaming the new folder to Money. So far, it seems to work. Why would re-installing Vista screw up permissions in my existing folders? I don't know what makes that happen. In Internet Explorer, with> re-install Vista and Money 2004 to get around issues caused by a hardware > upgrade. Money closed, I would delete your browser temporary files with Tools-> InternetOptions-> Delete-> DeleteFiles. I think you are saying that is what Money gives as the error message> cannot open it, possibly because it is a read-only file or you do not have > permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected. > If you have chosen the correct file and it cannot be accessed, you will need > to click ok and open the most recent backup file. > If the file is being used by another application, close it in the other > application and click ok to try again." when the Money file gets stuck as a temp file with a '~' in the name. People have said they can rename that file to *.mny and open the renamed file. |

| Yes. That's why my money data file is in the Users folder. It's the replacement for My Documents under Vista. When I used Money 2004 I put the data file in My Documents but I changed it to the Users folder when I installed Money the first time on Vista and it worked until after the re-install. I did not move the money data file. All I did was re-install Vista and Money. | Vista has some very rigorous rules about where you are allowed to create/update files. Program Files is a no-no. When you try to update a file in an area that Vista considers off-limits, it creates a transient tmp file but doesn't update the original. You need to move your .mny file to somewhere that Vista regards as "safe" e.g. My Documents. -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. I do not respond to any emails that I have not specifically asked for. | I installed Windows Vista Home Premium several months ago. I recently had to re-install Vista and Money 2004 to get around issues caused by a hardware upgrade. I had been using Money 2004 with no problems at all on Vista before the re-install. Following the re-install of Vista, almost every time I start Money I get the following error. When I look in the folder, my Money file is not there but there is a TMP file with a create date of every time I've closed Money and my backup file. I recover the backup file and everything is fine again until I close Money. A new TMP file is created and the backup is updated but my MNY file is gone again. This does not happen every time but something like 90% of the time. This is very annoying. "Money cannot locate 'C:\Users\Earl\Documents\Money\Truss.mny' or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read-only file or you do not have permission to change it or your disk drive is write protected. If you have chosen the correct file and it cannot be accessed, you will need to click ok and open the most recent backup file. If the file is being used by another application, close it in the other application and click ok to try again." |
