They did. It's called OFX, as in Open Financial Exchange. Intuit
tweaked it further to QFX which is nominally different. Some suggest
the only reason for the difference is so they can claim a patent and
license it to banks.

Who knows whether this is true, but I remember reading once that MS and some
others tried to institute a standard for sending financial transactions over
the web, which banks, credit cards, brokerages, etc. could all use. Among
other things, that would make it simple for a program like Money to contact
all these companies and maintain the users' records.

But the financial institutions didn't like that idea, preferring instead to
force users to log on to their own pages, so that they could bombard them
with advertising and other crap. That necessitated the use of screen
scrapers like Yodlee.

I half expect the institutions to attempt to sabotage the screen scrapers by
making frequent changes to their web pages. But maybe I'm just being
cynical. Or maybe that report is completely wrong. I really don't know much
about this business.

I guess I was thinking in terms of PayPal as I see it--just another
merchant.

I suspect that the answer lies here: Microsoft had deals with both CashEdge
and Yodlee as "third party" "direct services". These services "screen
scrape" the targets website masquerading as you. They then morph the data
into something that MSN Money can deal with and send it to Money the
application. For some reason unknown--probably money was involved
here--Microsoft dropped CashEdge. Turns out that some sites were getting
scraped by Yodlee and others by CashEdge. This cut some sites out when
CashEdge got cut out by Microsoft. Perhaps PayPal is unwilling to cooperate
with scraping by Yodlee? In this scenario the one remaining choice is that
PayPal could support a "direct services" interface.

I didn't know Paypal could ever be connected to Money, but Paypal does
produce QIF accounts which you can download manually.

Perhaps it's related that a Paypal connection is new in Quicken 2008?

Well, they take your money and hold it. They make and accept payments on
your behalf. They offer credit cards. They pay interest (and not bad
interest at that) on the money they hold for you.

It sounds like a bank and quacks like a bank...

Money used to support PayPal, but no longer does. Whether that's Money's
doing or PayPal's, I don't know, but I suspect PayPal.

Is PayPal a bank? A financial institution?

Is Money to blame, or PayPal?

I don't think so. I don't find it anywhere in Money Plus (08) and
Paypal makes no mention of support for Money. The only thing I find on
the Paypal web site is 'Download my history'.

Perhaps it previously was supported by CashEdge but, fo so,
Microsoft's consolidation of 3rd party services to Yodlee may have
eliminated that. If true, and if there is enough demand, Yodlee may
develop an interface to Paypal. Time will tell.

Default PayPal not in Bank list

Hello,
When I first installed MS Money 2006, I noticed that PayPal was in the
bank list. I was able to download transactions directly from PayPal, but
ever since I redid my data file, it is not there anymore. Am I looking in
the wrong places? Thank you.
