Default RE: Money Plus - slow execution on converted file?

****** UPDATE *******
I gave up on this for a few months but finally re-visited this new "Plus"
version on 11/15/2007 and stumbled into some ideas that forced me to do a
little experimentation and I was finally able to get my old file to upgrade
properly! So I'm posting my find here hoping it will help at least one soul!
The problem was with the budget, I can only speculate there must have been
some kind of corrupt record or something. Here are the steps I followed to
remedy the problem:
1- Make copy of Money file
2- Create new budget (tools/settings/budget/create new - Select "No, start
budget with recurring transactions...." NOTE: Be sure to "finish" the budget
creation by clicking through the "next" buttons
3-Tools/Settings/Budget "save or open a budget" then delete all budgets
using this dialog

Your Done... Close file and then open with Money Plus

Good Luck to those of you having upgrade issues!!!

We are using the workaround that Cal suggested - starting M+ with the Account
List rather than Home page. It works just fine as long as you never navigate
to the Home page. Strangely, if you minimize M+ and then return, M+ will
again thrash until it gets done with whatever it is doing. All balances are
correct and all investment functions work fine. We are waiting for MS to
issue a SP but that may take some time. There was one for Money 2007 shortly
after its release.

If I had know this was to be how the upgrade to M+ would perform, I would
never have left Money 2007.

BTW, we are running XP with SP2 and all upgrades, including MSIE 7.0. Our
PC is a newer Dell with a 2.8 P4, 1Gb of RAM and 119GB of unused disk, and
Road Runner Broadband at 1.5 Mbps. We do not think either our operating
system or our hardware are the problem.

I would first go to Tools-> Settings-> ProgramSettings and set the
(GeneralDisplayStartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:Accoun tList

That should speed up your starting, since it sounds as if the
"home" page is probably associated with the slowness.

Then Tools-> Settings-> HomePageDisplayOptions and Remove the
BillsAndDeposits and SpendingTracker modules. If you still have a
problem when you go to the "home" page, remove all modules. If the
problem goes away, you can add things back until the crash does not
happen. Add back in the other things you want on the home page.
Let us know which was the problem module.

Add me to the list of frustrated Money Plus 2008 users. I've
repaired, reloaded, archived, shut off internet security and
nada...Money Plus's home page continues to loads slow, really slow.
Once in Money navigating around is OK as long as you don't hit the
Home button. Is a service pack planned for Money Plus and when can we
expect to see it???

Thanks for the note. While I reopened my MS Support case, it would help if
you also would contact Money Support and report the same issue. If MS gets
enough users with the same problem, maybe they will look into it. The
responses I have been getting from MS are not conclusive and they are
throwing darts at the issue. BTW, I have removed all items from the Home
page except spending tracking and the normal favorite accounts listing. It
did not materially improve the launch speed.

I also noticed that Home page also thrashes if you minimize M+ and then
return, which I did last night. That Home module is apparently doing some
very time consuming task even when it is not needed and I have no idea what
it is.

Finally, I am just another user also, not an IT expert, just a retired
finance person.

Brewster1,

Thanks for posting this, as I was also having this problem. I was
considering removing Money Plus and buying Quicken until I came across
your post. After removing all but favorite accounts and bills and
deposit on my home page, my performance improved dramatically.

I agree that the one of the modules for the home page is at fault.

Thanks

Dick, thanks for the explanation - I had assumed MS was monitoring this site.
I have reopened my case with MS Support. Nice to have M+ working fine now,
but I avoid the Home page, for sure.

Cal doesn't work for Microsoft. He doesn't have system design folks in
Money. He can't report it to Support with much more impact than you can.

We are just fellow users out there in Usenet land.

Cal, another lead for your system design folks as they work on this. I had
the Home screen up and needed to minimize M+, which I did. Upon return, and
maximizing M+, it once again delayed the display for 2-3 minutes. Seems like
Home is where the problem exisits, as I am now running only the spending
tracking module on the Home page. BTW, the backup dialog box says the file
size for backup is 1.61Mb, not a large file at all. I have also archived
2006 transactions.

Will you be reporting this or do I need to return to MS Support and
reactivate my case there?

Cal, all items in the Investment display are correct and that module is
working just fine. On the Home page, I now have only "specific account
tracking" and "upcoming bills" modules open, and will remove the latter.
There is still a 2-3 minute delay when returning to the Home page this
morning, after the change, so it sure does seem to me that is where the
problem rests.

Cool. Something else that could speed entry into the Portfolio is to
un-tick Portfolio-> UpdatePrices-> UpdateAutomaticallyEvery__Minutes.

Another thing that might help quote fetching is to configure in the
LastUpdated column into one of your Portfolio views. Sort by that
column. Note any securities with symbols that have not updated in
the last day or two. While you may have fetching disabled for those,
you could have an old/bad symbol. Correcting those wouldn't hurt,
and could help. Money 2004 was particularly sensitive to bad
symbols, but it seems like a good thing to check for any version.

Another thing that you would probably want to do is to add an
AccountList icon at the top of the window, if you have not already
done so. Click Shortcuts at the top, and add in the buttons you
want, including AccountList and Portfolio.

For now, I would remove all of the rest of "home" page modules and

Cal, I have done what you suggested and the result was amazing - the program
boots and displays just like Money 2007 did, but the Account List now shows
up first. I can then go right to the Investment module without any
appreciable delay. I had previously removed the Investment Performance
module from the Home page so there was nothing to do again there.

Like previously reported to MS, returning even now to the Home Page incurs a
delay of 2-3 minutes to display, so that module surely seems to be where the
problem rests.

Please let us know when there are suggestions for fixing the Home Page
problem.

Thanks so very much for this workaround and we will avoid the Home Page
until there is an SP fixing whatever the problem is.

I don't work for Microsoft. Maybe somebody at Microsoft would be
able to use your offer.

Be aware that Cal and 99.5% of the other posters in the newsgroup are not
Microsoft employees. We are just your fellow users out there in Usenet land.

Cal, we are running three separate Money files: one for myself which
includes investments, one for my wife which does not, and one for our
daughter which is essentially only her checking account. My wife's runs
slow, but nothing like mine. My daughter's, with only the checking account,
runs slower than Money 2007 but loads and launches in under one minute. The
problem does indeed seem to be in the Home Page tasks. Today when returning
from my Investments page to the Home Page, the delay was about 2 minutes to
reload the Home Page.

If you wish to use my file for code debugging, let me know how to send it to
Microsoft in a secure manner.

Who knows? I don't think M+ is particularly designed for Vista. The Money
team is usually many OS versions behind on "designed for". They struggle
enough on "works with". (To wit: note that M+ has really bad karma with DEP
in Vista.)

Note that my M+ test machine is my recently "cast-off" 850MZ PIII laptop
with 384MB running XPSP2 with no appreciable difference in performance
compared to how it ran M07. (I haven't yet installed any Money on my new
2.4GHz C2D with 2GB and Vista Business laptop. That's later in the week,
maybe. Haven't decided what version to install.)

I think, once again, that your issue is somehow more complex and specific.
Sadly, I just can't say how/what.

I would first go to Tools-> Settings-> ProgramSettings and set the
(GeneralDisplayStartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:Accoun tList

That may speed up your starting, since it sounds as if the "home"
page may be associated with the slowness.

Then Tools-> Settings-> HomePageDisplayOptions and Remove the
Investment Performance module. If you still have a problem when you
go to the "home" page, remove all modules. If the problem goes
away, you can add things back until the crash does not happen. Add
back in the other things you want on the home page. Let us know
which was the problem module.

We have tried everything to identify this performance deficiency and nothing
helps. The folks at MS Support ran out of ideas. I did remove some of the
home page tasks and saw no real difference. Strange, but when you navigate
back from the investments page to the home page, there is also a long delay,
so that seems to be where some of the problem is. All the balances are
correct and all functions are proper, only long, long delays booting up and
enabling tasks. MS asked us to wait for an SP. I do remember there was an
SP in Money 2007 shortly after it was released.

I think this could be a result of Plus being designed for Vista, as we are
running XP with all the updates loaded. Our newer Dell PC has a fine P4
processor as well as lots of memory and disk, so MS does not think our PC is
the problem. The file conversion task went fine when we installed Plus.

IF the past is an indicator, an SP for Money is unlikely. (I have no
knowledge one way or the other whether they are working any high-impact,
pervasive, issues that they might think warranted one. But it seems unlikely
based on the traffic here.)

My file is just south of 60MB and works more or less on M+ as on M07.

There may be value in investigating other possibilities besides just "bigger
files". Are you running Insights? Have you tried "Nuke The Bills" in a test
copy of the file? Have you tried the File|Repair options? Have you played
around with the settings for updating quotes or anything else? Have you
played around with what widgets are selected for display on your Money home
page? These are all just guesses of things that I'd consider playing with to
see if I could narrow down a suspect area. There are probably lots of other
candidates that smart people here could suggest. Those are what comes to
mind for me.
