I will attempt this and get back to you. Any thoughts on the large number of
Vista users who are encountering password requests with Money?

What you should have downloaded was Money Plus Deluxe. (Essentials
will not open earlier files.) Even with Deluxe you might have needed
an earlier intermediate version
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919524/en-us method 1 should work.
Money Plus Deluxe might have been able to do it directly, or it
might need the intermediate step.

You should check your disk for a *.m10 file. If a version of Money
tries to convert a Money 2002 file to a later version, it will
create a backup named *.m10 before modifying the file. If you copy
that .m10 file to *.mny, then Money 2002 should be able to open it.

After looking through my computers and other posts I should restate my case a
bit. The version of money I was using was Money 2002. My hard drive crashed
and the partition where money was located was unrecoverable. However, I had
several backups saved to disk and the HD of my laptop.

I built a new comuter with the Vista operating system. I downloaded the
current Money Essentials trial software and attempted to restore my Money
backups. At that point I was told that Money cannot restore from previous
versions.

At that point I found my old Money CD and uninstalled Essentials and
reinstalled 2002. But now, everytime I try to restore from the backup I am
prompted for a password.

I noticed elsewhere problems with Vista and Money passwords. Is this the
Issue? Is it more of a Vista issue than a Money one? I have tried all other
suggestions here without success.

Thank you,

Kevin

DONE IT!!! While I was waiting I browsed other questions and found this link
http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=177 from Dick Watson under the question
thread "Restoring 2005 Money File! And it worked for me. Oh wow, I can sleep
again now.

Right, to try to answer the questions and set the scene. I am, so far as I am
aware, using similar versions from the same country. If I use Money 2002,
which is the only cd I have so I KNOW it is the only version I have used, I
get the password message and the "use a newer version" advice. When I do
that, using, so far as I am aware, the same version but a newer model if you
like, I get the messgae, upon trying to restore my backup, that it cannot
read the mny file (which is where it tells me to save the restored back up)
as it may be read only etc, which it is not.

I have tried all the fixes given here to no avail and am at my wits end with
the thought of having to try to find several years printed summaries and
restart from scratch for the small charity and club I run so I can file a
return :-(((

OOOps. Should have read farther.See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=105 and
http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=152. They may point the way to your answer.
Lots of people forget they've upgraded somewhere along the way and the first
CD they find is older than what they were actually running when the data
file in question was last closed.

Cal,

I am having the exact same situation. I had Money 2002 on my system that
just crashed. I installed Money Essentials from the MS website and tried to
restore the old backups, but got an error saying that Money Essentials cannot
restore from an earlier version of money.

Then I found my old Money 2002 disc and installed it, but now when I go to
open either the old Money data file or the backup file I get a password
required dialog box. The only password I have used with Money was my
passport name and password, which I still know and use, but it will not
accept anything I type.

All of the versions I am using are USA versions.

Thanks,

Kevin

Did the actual error message say "incompatible version"? If so, they
probably aren't. There is another related possibility if the
regional settings are different.

No potential for two counties being involved that you can think of?

You need a newer version from the same country as the original.

Default Password request on new PC

I know this thread has been posted before but none of the answers given work
for me :-(. I installed my old version of Money 2002 on a new PC but when
trying to restore my back up it asked for a password, which I have NEVER used
with Money. I searched the Microsoft site and it suggested that th answer was
to install a newer version and it would work. I did this but now all I get
when I try to restore is a message that the back up was created with a
different version and cannot be opened!!!

As these are small charity accounts I am desperate for a solution so would
be EXTREMELY grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Carol
