| You could validate or invalidate this by temporarily moving the Money file to the laptop to see if the symptoms reverse. | "Slower" could be the key. Access may be not be restricted solely by the ".LRD" locking file. I have no idea how Money is coded, but if I were coding it, I would map the Money file into memory if it resided on the local machine in order to enhance performance, something that cannot be done remotely over a network. Remotely, the file, or portions thereof, would have to be cached. In other words, and this is pure speculation, running Insights on the desktop may be mapping the Money file into memory, thus denying the laptop concurrent access. Money may be able to run on the desktop, however, even if Insights is running on the laptop, since Insights on the laptop cannot remotely map the Money file. OK. Insights is keeping the most recently used Money file locked(via the .lrd file) to the other computer. Besides turning off Insights, you could open a different file on the main PC. That is not going to be that useful, so your best bet will be to turn off Insights while doing the remote access, as you have been doing. Another possibility would be that if the laptop wanted to do some effectively read-only access, it could copy the .mny to its space and open the copy. Of course any changes will not be reflected back to the main box. - quote - > "Cal Learner-- MVP" <via_newsgroup[at]please.tnx> wrote in message news:tmkbc3hut79n3tte3q4fe03f9l5prraniq[at]4ax.com... > In microsoft.public.money, SteveC wrote: > > Dick has it exactly right. | Update. Insights is apparently not the problem nor is mnybbsvc.exe, which is loaded on main machine and laptop will open the file with it running. I can have insights running on laptop and I can open Money Plus on the desktop, but the reverse is not true. If insights is running on the desktop, the laptop will hang if I try to open Money Plus. Close Insights on the desktop, and it loads! I have the Money file on my Public folder in my Vista machine. Both machines are running Vista and Money Plus. On Tools-> InternetUpdates-> CustomizeUpdates in Money Plus there is acheckbox to control Automated Online Updates. If the box is ticked, mnybbsvc.exe, the background banking service, is run. If you open a Money file where the checkbox is cleared, mnybbsvc.exe ends. You are able to select this even if there is no LiveID on the file. Tell Money to Update Now (such as with Tools-> InternetUpdates-> UpdateNow) when you want updates. Keep lots of backups. I would increase the number of backups that Money keeps on each computer. You are in unsupported operation by having both computer accessing that file. |

| I'd agree it's a good thing if the binary choice is (prevents bad things from happening by not working at all) or (allows bad things to happen by working in ignorance). I don't agree that those are the only two choices that should exist for shared access to a data file in late 2007. Maybe in 2001 or 2 this would have been a "state of the art" choice--but then we had the case of allowing bad things to happen by working in ignorance. Why Insights prevents access by M+--if it really just uses the data file read-only--is another interesting question. MoneyLink certainly works fine in parallel with Money being "in the file". | I read the OP to say, but cannot presently test: "Computer A and B both have M+ installed. Computer A and B are on a net together. They both frequently use \\someserver\somehsare\MyMsMoneyFile.MNY. Computer A is trained to run M+Insights against \\someserver\somehsare\MyMsMoneyFile.MNY, and is running it now, but is not now running M+. The only reason I say that, knowing little more than nothing about how MoneyInsights accesses the data file, is that Money has a long and distinguished track record of ignoring or even being hostile--by omission really, there probably isn't one iota of commission involved--to the possibility that a Money user might have multiple computers on a network, several of which can use Money, and might actually know how to have one of them use a file located on the other one or even a third one. I was thinking you were saying "desktop" to refer to a desktop computer as distinguished from laptop, palmtop, or whatever. And you are clicking on a shortcut on your Windows Desktop to open Money Plus. And that shortcut points to your Money file? And is that the only Money file that you have run recently? I would be interested in understanding what you are describing. However you may be able to work around what you are seeing by opening Money by right-clicking the Insights icon. So is your main computer a laptop, and how is that interfaced toyour desktop? Insights only periodically looks at your most recently used file. It is unclear what you are describing. |
