In the UK, the last version of Microsoft Money we had was Money 2005.
However, on the box and CD, it never referenced the version number, and then
we found out there were no more versions planned for us. The new naming,
removing the year number strikes me that potentially Money could move in the
same direction, not necessarily ending the product, but perhaps reducing the
every-year product cycle. It now gives them the issue of what to call the
next version... Money Plus 2009? Money Plus Plus..

Very interesting, Dick. I have been awaiting availability of the Mini
Box version of Premium Plus, so I am not yet familiar with the licensing
and policy information.

I am aware, however, that there is no "2008". I was simply attempting
to identify the latest version of Money without using the word "Plus".

I do think that the corporate imperative buzz initiative of the month is at
work in the name change. They surely get this kind of pressure from on high
as any of us in the large corporate world do. These initiatives come and go
like the seasons and us peons are forced to carry the water until upper
management gets excited by something else.

But it seems ever clearer that their heart just isn't in the standalone
software application end of Money. Did you see the new provision in the
online services policy that infers the possibility of a future fee-based way
to extend online services without any version upgrade? Are you aware that
they've plugged the online services extension date into the activation
framework so that they can extend the date on an existing license without
making you buy a newer version? Some of this only becomes meaningful in a
world where there are no new versions and/or the new versions are many years
farther apart than they have been. The latter seems wholly consistent with
eliminating the self-obsolete product naming.

I readily concede I could be wrong. MPlusPlus could come out next year at
this time and be a total rewrite with lots of new features and capabilities.

Note also that there is no "Money 2008 Plus". They do not use the term Money
2008 much of anywhere.

Default Microsoft's new Money 2008 naming scheme

While reading this recent article, it occurred to me that the new "Plus"
may refer to what Ray Ozzie terms "software plus services". Here is the
link and an excerpt:

Microsoft Describes Technology Behind Software Plus Services
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,135159/article.html

"This services transformation, from software to software plus services,
is a very very big deal for our company," said Ray Ozzie, chief software
architect for Microsoft, speaking during his company's annual financial
analyst meeting. "It will be a critical aspect of all our offerings over
the next years."

Many have said for years, particularly Dick Watson, that Microsoft has
been morphing Money from a standalone offline product into a Web-based
services product for which not even help is local.

Perhaps I'm way off base on this considering that there will be a Works
Plus, but it's a unique product version, whereas "Plus" is attached to
every version of Money 2008.

Just my two cents worth.
