I always go to Costco each year and purchase the disk at the usual net cost of about $25. Been doing it for 11 years now and expect to do it again around August 27th. Steve |

| I did read the whole paragraph. And I know it wasn't the main point of the paragraph. And I haven't waited for a rebate on Money in years, either. I was just saying that $20-$25 is what an awful lot of reasonably careful shoppers have been paying for the thing for a long time--many without the mickey mouse of rebates. Back in the Mv4 and M97 era, many of us never paid a thing for it as they couldn't give it away fast enough. All of which was my point in the first instance. They don't make much money on it without giving upgraders an extra break. Now, as to it being "unfair" that new users pay the same as returning users, isn't that kinda the same when you buy most anything? Why should software be different? Especially now that it looks less and less like a product every version and more and more like a subscription service? Heck, many magazines go out of their way to try to keep renewing subscribers from getting as good a deal as they offer new subscribers. Ditto cable companies and SatTV and ISPs and so on. The upgrade prices on premium priced software (Office, PhotoShop, etc.) are probably there just to move more merch since they know there is a reluctance to upgrade, especially at the higher price points. But Money is NOT at a higher price point--if it's retailing for $25, Microsoft probably nets only a couple of bucks after the cost of goods sold; one support call and they are way upside down on the deal--and we've just come full circle. | Dick, Read the whole paragraph. In it I stated that some places give you the rebate up front; those that don't have a mail-in rebate. The net price is never $49.99. This was not even the main point of the paragraph. John G. | Dick, As a long-time user of Money, I am well aware of both of the facts I (and you) mentioned. Saying they have always done it regarding the UI does not make it right. I am a big time supporter of MS but I do not understand why they set up UI rules for others yet they break them within their own company. And, to be honmest, I do not think the Money UI is that extraordinary that rules need to be broken (plus it has not changed for several years). But that is just my humble opinion. As far as $20 or so out the door, noone buys anything less than Deluxe ($49.99) and some buy Premium ($79.99) or Home/Business ($89.99). Yes, I know all come with mail-in rebates that bring them down $20 or $30. I also know that some stores mark them down so you do not have to mail in a rebate. What strikes me as unfair is that the same rebate goes to the new user as to the one who supported the product for years. But, of course, this is not my call to make. FYI - I have already purchased M+ Deluxe at $39.99 with a $20 rebate via a link from my previous version of Money. I am not sure if the additional $10 discount was for being a download customer, being an early adopter (or perhaps even because I was a previous customer?) John G. | Money has ALWAYS done its own thing with the UI. I'm not saying I approve or disapprove, it's jus the way it is. Of course, Money has also always targeted a pretty broad range of platforms in terms of the OS native UI. And Money has never, that I recall, offered upgrade pricing. When you are going out the door for $20 or so, there's just not that much room to work with. | Thanks Cal. I do find it amazing that MS cannot follow its own UI rules in products such as Money & Encarta. I also have difficulty with the fact that they do not offer any update consideration in their pricing. John G. | Last November I purchased M2007 Premium. Now I see M+ is now available. My question: I was not particularly thrilled with the non-compliance of Money with Microsoft's own UI scheme in Vista. However, I coul.d not gripe since it was out before Vista. Is M+ just as non-compliant with Vista's UI or have they done something in this area? If so, what? I have not seen any screenshots and don't wish to deal with download/install/uninstall/cross fingers that old version/old file still works just to see what it looks like. John G. |
