So you are saying that your backup(s) are from Money 2000 and not
from after you had installed a later trial. But I guess now that you
are saying you did *not* install a later trial version; you only did
the internet updates to Money 2000 by going to the home page and
clicking "Update Internet Information" or got the updates while
downloading Online Statements. I have not heard of any Money 2000
file incompatibility from that.

And since you say "backups" you are saying you have more than one
set of backup floppies or files on CD. And none of them will open
with Money 2000 giving the "password" error.

And you don't buy my theory that somebody installed the Money 2003
or Money 2004 trial version on your machine prior to your saving
your current backups.

So you were running Money 2000. You downloaded Money 2003 or Money
2004 trial version which converted your Money 2000 file to the newer
format and saved the Money 2000 backup as *.mn8. You did not keep a
Money backup from the Money 2000 either. Then you saved only the
backup of the converted 2003/2004 Money file and then formatted
your hard drive.

Not much. What you wish you had saved is a copy of that .mn8 file or
a backup that pre-dated the conversion. At least you have a backup.
I would write-protect the backup you have and make an extra copy in
case that media were to fail.

Sometimes there are offers that bundle Money with other things such
as Taxcut.

Yes, I did. I had upgraded it from the MS website. Now I
can't find any upgrades for Money 2000, just fixes. The
last thing I want to do is buy this stupid program again!
Isn't there anything else I can do?

Oh, wait. You reformatted, so you will not have a *.mn8 file
remaining.

I suggest you try the Money 2004 trial. If that solves your problem,
buy Deluxe at your favorite store.

I suspect somebody tried a newer version on Money on your machine
before you saved the .mny file.

See if you can find a *.mn8 file on you hard drive. That would have
been created as a backup of your Money 2000 file when somebody tried
a newer version. If you find that file, the date should be
significant to you.

Default Money 2000

I had to reformat my old computer due to multiple
errors. I reinstalled Money 2000 but it won't let me
restore my backups. MS Knowledge Base says its because I
made them on a newer version of Money. I have updated
it since I reinstalled it. Now what? Help!
