It's unfortunate that this is the best choice on offer for fixing the
problems Money has created all by itself. But it certainly has proven
effective for many users.

Here are the before and after results from using the 'Nuke the Bills'
procedure:

BEFORE:
File size: 44,516 kB
Backup file size: 44,460 kB
Time it takes to open 'Money' from clicking the "next" button: 50 seconds
Additional time for graphs on home page to display: 30 seconds
Additional time until hourglass disappears: 10 seconds
Time to switch from "Home" page to "Bills summary" page: 50 seconds
Time it takes to switch back to Home page from Bills summary page" 14
seconds + 7 additional seconds for graphs to display
Time it takes to switch to Checking account from Home page: 2 seconds

Results AFTER:

File Size (*.mny) = 40,892 kB

Backup File size (*.mbf) = 40,843 kB

Time it takes to open Money from pressing 'next' button: 6 seconds

Additional time for display of home page graphs: < 1 second

Additional time until hourglass disappears: 4 seconds

Time to switch from 'Home' page to 'Bills Summary' page: 1 second

Time it takes to switch back to 'Home' page from 'Bills and summary': 1
second + < 1 second for graphs to display.

Time it takes to switch to checking account: <1 second

I wrote a procedure, step by step, to be able to duplicate in the future.
All together it took about 4-5 hours to do it.

It was definitely worth it.

I have not done anything with my budget yet but the cash flow forecast looks
good.

Another thing you could do to help make identifying which transactions you
want to make reoccuring easier after "nuke the bills" is to mark them for
followup (right-click - Flag for Follow up)

OK, I am going to try it. I think I'll measure some performance issues
before and after to see what is the difference.

Your approach of getting them back from register entries also works,
assuming that, say, you don't have ones that are scheduled one way and
typically entered after some editing. My paychecks, for instance, have a
scheduled item that says "for pay period ending mm/dd/yy" that is edited on
entry.

Scheduled transactions and cash flow forecast are my most important tactical
tools in Money.

If you have similar results to many of us, you will be shocked by the
improvement in performance and, maybe, stability, nuking the bills makes.

Default Money FAQ: Nuke the Bills

I'm thinking about doing the "Nuke the Bills" method to improve performance.
I just started using M07 having upgraded from M03. My file is 44.2 kB and
my I have been using Money since Dec. 1994 (don't remember what was the
first version but Money was on the PC we bought for Christmas that year -
maybe it was 3.1 or something?).

In the unofficial FAQ's it says "Another way to aid the process is to
systematically enter all your bills in registers before nuking them."

Since all the Bills and Deposits in my list Bills summary are all ones
already in register (e.g. 90% of these are in my main checking account
register) after I nuke them could I go to the most recent and right click
and select "make recurring" to add them back to the list, one by one?

I would still print out the list to insure I don't miss any but would this
seems like a way to ease the pain of doing this.

I liked the suggestion of opening the Money file on a laptop or second
computer as another way to rebuild the Bills summary.

I think my file will benefit because it takes 20 seconds for the screen to
refresh each time I do an edit to the bill summary.

The Bills summary is my favorite feature of Money because if used well its
an excellent way to keep bills and deposits done in a timely manner and
keeps the cash flow forecast fairly accurate.
