The scheduled bill need not be real. It can be estimated as a
placeholder. I do that for planned significant purchases, such as
vacations, or anticipated appliance replacements.

Let's say I do not have a bill yet. Let's say I have some possible
purchases, and I want to enter them in more in some proposed status rather
than enter an actual obligation due. Is there any support for such a
concept?

If you schedule a bill for $1600 to be paid in the future, the cash
flow forecast will reflect the effect on cash flow of the pending
payment.

There are other ways. That's one. Download the free trial version for
hands on.

If you choose to buy Money, wait a few months. The new version
generally comes out in late summer. There is neither an upgrade
discount, nor protection for recent buyers of the old version, when
the new version comes out. The trial is good for 90 days, I think, so
it will cover you until the new version is released. All data entered
in the trial version is good for the paid version, current or future.

Also, get a hard copy at a discount store like Sam's or Office Depot.
It prevents future problems should you have to reinstall, and forget
your license number, etc.

Default Budgeting Features in Money

I'm trying to decide between Quickbooks and Microsoft Money for my parents.
The single most important feature for me is to help them budget unexpected
expenses. If for example they have an unexpected dental expense of $1600,
I want them to be able to enter that into the software and have it visibly
show them that they have less money to spend in the next two months, even
before they have received the invoice or paid it.

What features does Money have relative to this feature?
